when it was airing there would be 2-3 of these threads on /a/ round the clock all the time, to ridiculous proportions right after an episode aired. I never got really into it but I thought the first few episodes were fun, so i stuck through the season, but I think I remember seeing anons post that in the LN you find out later that he's not fat, he just has low self esteem and views himself that way, and so he is portrayed as such until later on. I don't know if it was true or not though.

Other players were relying on grinding their levels to win fights. They knew they were safe because they were in a group. If they started losing they could just switch with a team member and chug health potions. Kirito didn't have that luxury. He had to learn to dodge attacks to maintain survivability.
