As arisuchan's first collaborative project, we are seeking audio engineers and other volunteers from the SEL community to participate in the creation of a fan edit of Serial Experiments Lain in which we replace all of the music with scene appropriate ambient, IDM, and glitch music including artists such as Autechre, Boards of Canada, and Aphex Twin.
Please introduce yourself on arisuchan.jp/remix or in #sel-remix on Freenode if you are interested.
examples of artists we might like to feature:
Access to Arasaka, Aes Dana, Amon Tobin, Aphex Twin, Apparat, Arovane, Autechre, Boards of Canada, CONNECT.OHM, edIT, Helios, Jega, KiloWatts, Lone, Miyuki, Moderat, Nautilis, Ochre, Oneohtrix Point Never, Phonem, Polygon Window, Proem, Swod, Tycho, Venetian Snares

Why would you want to do this, the music in the show was fine?
>>
>>162158761
I wonder where to even look for people that could help with this? It's such as specific search.

a) SEL fans AND b) IDM fans AND c) can do audio

I don't get it - do you want to write completely new OST from scratch or just to make a compilation of 90-s electronic music?

Neither? We want to take 90s/00s IDM and replace the shitty rock.

This is so fucking stupid. The music (and silence/electric buzz) choices in the series are chosen for a reason. Just because IDM might fit the aesthetic of the series doesn't mean it fits thematically.

What is even the purpose of this aside from trying to gratify your own autism?
>>
>>162160761
>do you have any progress on it that you've done already? I'm a bit hesitant to take you seriously if all you have is some track lists.
We're in the process of watching through SEL and making notes, documenting the start and stop times for when music is playing and what is happening at the time so we can begin to arrange when/where to place music. We are also accepting track suggestions.

We are very serious.

>i'm more worried about the editing. are you just going to overlay the tracks onto the original audio?
No. It will be difficult, but we are trying to remove the existing music as much as possible. The scenes with music but without dialogue shouldn't be too hard, but those with both will be more challenging.
>>
Replace everything with Takahiro Mukai or gtfo
>>
how do you remove music without stripping dialogue?

>INTELLGENT dance music for INTELLECTUALS like me who watch INTELLECTUAL anime like Lain
How ironic can this shit get, this is why I can't say I like SEL anymore without being blasted by all of /a/. Why does this fanbase have to be so retarded?

Dance music is so fucking bad for gloomy atmophere regardless of its it's IDM or not. Even shit like drone or instrumental black metal as the soundtrack would be better than any form of dance music.
>>
eh
>>
neat
>>
>>162163496
>black metal
>drone
You know I could see a really buzzy BM band like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01bN0EHacbs work well in the later scenes when lain starts to lose it. I agree that electronic music is shit for this type of idea, it just doesn't have the atmosphere that something like lain needs.
>>
>>162160672
holy shit this could work..
>>
Stop bumping your shit thread, OP.
>>
>>162160843
I think that is their purpose, anon. Some sort of overblown AMV-esque project to raise autism awareness.
>>
If you honestly think people want to listen to your shitty edits for a show that already has a fitting OST, you need to kill yourself.
>>
>>162163496
did you actually listen to it or did you just read the name and make fun of it? 'cause most of it isn't dance music unless you've got some crazy moves.

boogiepop phantom has some nice idm stuff in the ost, so i think it could work well with lain too. however boogiepop phantom used its music very, very sparingly, and didnt just spam idm tracks everywhere, and i worry that a fan project based around swapping the soundtrack is going to do that and it'll be a mess. it doesnt matter whats on the soundtrack if its used terribly.
>>
>>162163496
>Dance music is so fucking bad for gloomy atmophere regardless of its it's IDM or not. Even shit like drone or instrumental black metal as the soundtrack would be better than any form of dance music.
Did you even listen to OPs links? You can't dance to that shit, lol. It *is* moody and atmospheric.

IDM != EDM
>>
This thread is almost nothing but: "How dare people try to do something creative! I must let them know it's shit!" hilarious
>>
>>162173687
Yes I know what IDM before this thread, it isn't a bad genre of music. You think someone who unironically listens to drone or BM wouldn't know what IDM is?

Did you actually listen to their examples and think how the fuck any of it would fit into a show like Lain? Boogiepop phantom isnt even close to the same as Lain, if Lain were music it would literally be atmopheric music. Having 4x4 time signature dance music that yes, you can actually dance too, in Lain doesn't fit what so ever.

>>162173740
Shut the fuck up OP, if you want to be creative then at least think about the kind of music that fits
>>
>>162173729
And it's not like you're just shoving in full tracks like an AMV. It's carefully selected pieces. If music playing for 7 seconds in the anime, you're going to get 7 seconds of IDM in the edit.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qchdk-O9crY
>>
>>162173760
No, you shut the fuck up OP.
>>
Can we do something productive instead of bitching like talk about Lain's game or if anime would better without any music at all?
http://laingame.net/
>>
>>162173729
>Has standard time signature
>includes typical electronic dance music beeps and boops
>literally has dance music in the name of the genre
Just because sometime is slower in tempo doesnt mean you can't dance to it. Also no its not moody or atmospheric, here is something that is both that would actually fit in with Lain's style https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28TqFKy4lG0
>>
>>162173888
Don't bother with them, its a bunch of retards who know almost nothing about music. The OP is clearly just someone who loves IDM and wants any excuse to use it. Why he doesn't pick literally any other series I have no idea.

>>
>>162174811
https://youtu.be/eVXP_ZTpXIk?t=901
>These tracks were constructed in 1988 ("Primal Image") and 1986 ("Beauty") as a series of segments averaging several minutes each, with transitional overdubs at the seams, and with heavy use of EQ for harmonic balance and noise reduction. About 20 hours of source material was recorded using contact microphones on telephone wires over a cumulative period of 10 days in November 1981 ("Primal Image") and April 1983 ("Beauty").
I personally think it could fit. It's not quite an electric hum, but it's moody enough, and even oppressive.
>>
>>162174944
Fuck; to avoid any misunderstandings that's still me, (>>162174811). I'm ESL and I'm sorry if I worded that weirdly.

That's just one guy who bought miles of old unused telegraph wires. The artist is the wind itself; Lamb just made it more palatable with his computer. It's more suited as a background track than the Faust album.
>>
>>162175037
Doesn't change that its shit, if you want pure humming faust still does it better. You can just rip out a few seconds of humming and replay it. This shit sounds like a horror movie track
>>
>>162175110
It's not all like that, though. The beginning and the end of each track are rather calm and moody.
