As I understood it, SEELE were trying to jump-start something that would eventually happen anyway, the next step of human evolution.

End situation: a big see of goo (LCL), with one vast consciousness made up of everyone.

The created Rei (somehow using Lillith) to make it happen. They put Shinji and Unit 01 into the position they needed to be part of the mechanism that made it happen. Then they added the MPEs (for some reason), and pressed "GO" and everyone started dissolving.

There were two flies in the ointment:

1. Gendo had eaten that Adam foetus in an attempt to subvert the process and make himself god (not sure how that works)

2. Rei decided "fuck you" and granted Shinji the power to go ahead with the plan or allow people to leave as they saw fit

Gendo appeared to fail, but Shinji was successful. He himself left, and Asuka left as well. I thought the implication was that billions of other people could then follow them, but the film ended before we saw any of that.

This is some pretty epic headcanon. There's nothing in the rebuild movies that suggests it's as straightforward as literally taking place after EoE.

Basically, the rebuild movies seem to retell the series in abridged form. yet there's curious features of the world and characters that suggest it's after EoE, such as:

- the sea being red
- a stain being on the moon
- the characters mental health being slightly better off than they were at the end of EoE
- Certain scenes unfolding differently, like in NGE Asuka slaps Rei for acting like a doll, wheras in Rebuild Rei catches the slap as if she was expecting it

It's probably something weird like some time travel multiverse shit, where everything is reset with slightly different parameters and certain events and personal development got carried back in order to try again and hope for a better result.

It was a clone, the whole point of the evas was based off of the biblical Adam and eve. Eve was created by Adam's rib, well units 00 and 02 were that clone. One of the big ideas in the show is that no matter how close we get, people can't truly understand each other. Instrumentality solves this by making all people into one entity. suddenly, everyone's thoughts become your own.

Misato dies, gives him the necklace - and Shinji decides to end the world anyway. It's only when Rei reaches into Shinji and instrumentality he's at all able to think clearly and with someone. Rei makes him remember that there's a real world, and that there was a real Misato he ran away from.

Misato herself is quite dead and non-communicative at this point.

Lack of development on Shinji's part is part of the point of the series. There's a thing in the rebuild DVD booklet (I know, I know) where Anno talks about Eva being a story of repitition, of Shinji facing the same situation and failing time and time again, but still finding the courage to try again. Sort of ties into Anno saying that Shinji is a reflection of his current self, that he was never able to move past that stage.

This is correct. Misato basically spells out everything he learns in instrumentality and what the correct choice to make is beforehand.

Also correct me if I am wrong but Shinji did not choose to initiate instrumentality. My understanding was that it was initiated through the EVA series and 01 by Seele. And that the only choice Shinji made was to stop it, since he happened to be inside of Unit 01.

No, Asuka's "explanation" would never be correct in any situation whatsoever. The question was about the fishy nature of NERV's actions and the whole situation, which Asuka even refuses to consider by repeating what she's told. Unlike Shinji, Misato and Rei, Asuka is unable to think for herself.

There are some slight variations of this plan by some competing actors in the shows and spin-off games. Gendo wants something similar, but slightly different. It's never really revealed what he wants to do differently.

A liquid similar to the primordial soup from which all live came from originally. It is used in the show to create a mental link between EVA and pilot. The LCL that is used for this purpose is revealed to be the blood of Lilith. When the AT-Field of a living being collapses, then their bodies turn into LCL.

It has some funky properties, like you can breath it if it is oxygenated and it becomes transparent if you send a current through it.

All living beings with a soul create this field naturally, it prevents souls from merging with each other and if it is sufficiently strong then it can also be used to create physical barriers, but only angels and EVAs can create fields that strong.

LCL is Lilith's blood. Lilith reverted them back into LCL and absorbed both them and their soul into herself. Lilith created life from her own body and ended it on a Shinjj's request. Once Shinji rejected instrumentality, she sacrificed her physical form to give those lives the possibility to return. Though, as seen by the Rei apparitions, she still exists in some form.
