Lain is a really interesting something I have never witnessed before in my 5 lives, and I think it's importance in the internet is extremely controversial and maybe a little convoluted, but I can't get too not carried away in myself, so I digress.

You see, when it comes to Lain and the intricacies of her self, we can assume she is indeed the Goddess of the overworld of what we call the interconnected consciousness of the human mind that is dubbed as the 'Wired' - it is a parallel to the interconnected network we all live here today on this very plane of existence.

So you see, that is thy it's importance is extremely interesting, and yes it is an anime with narrow appeal to the masses, but that it not important right now.

What is important is the philosophy it carries out to you in its own convolutedness, and I believe that is where the beauty of all of it lies, within the many lies and truths and twist around the narrative that is the story of Lain and her development into Goddess (unless you would also debate that she was Goddess from the very start). The way that its convolutendess in carrying the messge is is parallel to how convoluted and twisted and confusing the connection of networks in this day and age is now - now, we have a big influx of information and data within society, so much so that the truth is now subjective, and that the objective truth can never be known. I believe that Lain is meta in this way, in that its very convoluted conveyance of message is parallel to this - Lain, not just her f=self but the whole show, exists on an entirely different plane of meta - we are nothing to her.

Either way I think you probably meet way too many trannies, and the reason they latch onto something like lain or any psychological anime is because most of them are depressed or have major psychological issues themselves. You cannot put blame on something simply because a small population you encounter frequently enjoys it.

As an example I showed lain to my own father, who has had a successful life and used to be in theater. He said it was one of the most enjoyable things he watched, that is a 60 yea old man whos had a family and a business.

Funnily enough I just finished watching a recommendation list with Sky Crawlers on it. Was going to watch it but booked it away for tomorrow since it's late as hell here. Shame to hear it's not that great.

I'm like halfway through Shinsekai Yori and I've started Akagi, never been a fan of most of A-1 works nor have I ever played mahjong but I'm finding both shows to be pretty great so far.

It might have been better if I didn't pick up the entire plot point in the first 5 minutes, all the good reviews I read about it after I finished watching seemed to not realize till it gives it away. So perhaps if you don't immediately know whats going to happen its better. Even then it was full of 3d shit and I did not enjoy the characters at all.

I loved Akagi, not as much as Kaji but it was still great. I would recommend the manga "Saikyou Densetsu Kurosawa" made by the same guy if you're into manga, its even better than the other two in my opinion. I also have no experience in majong, I found watching a couple basic guides on youtube improved my experience watching though.

Already read Saikyou Densetsu Kurosawa my man, one of my favourite manga of all time. Made me cry like a bitch at the end.

As for Shinsekai Yori, I've found it to be pretty different than what I expected it to be. If you watch it, just know that the first few episodes are pretty great but episode 8 and 9 have a pretty significant drop in quality, but everything after that is pretty much really great. It also has a fantastic villain in it, and it's got a really interesting atmosphere.

If you like shows with sorta-philosophical tones to them I'd recommend you watch Kino's Journey too, it's pretty comfortable but great.
