The anime as a whole kind lost me when the backstory got introduced because it wavered and changed vash's character from what we saw originally.
He went from trying to enjoy life and be happy to "I need to be edgy in order to kill bad people"

Yeah it's a bit weird. The first half is just goofy fun with some action. It throws a bunch of drama right in your face out of no where after that
