Maybe 4chan would be able to put forward some falseflag Sam Hyde is a killer shit that could narrow the search. The biggest breakthrough L has is the death of that one guy on TV, when it only broadcasted in that one area, 4chan wouldn't be able to have that reach.

First thing we'd do is analyze his kill pattern. We'd notice the heart attacks, active time window, and criminals he's killing. From there, someone would find the deaths match up with the criminals' appearance on tv or other media. Enough digging around would result in the first victim being discovered in Japan. Someone would also eventually hypothesize he needs a name and a face; perhaps he falls for a hit list we circulate where fake names and pictures are mixed in with real criminals.

I know, everyone will be dismissive of these endless possibilities. Everyone is biased to assume that because Lind L. Tailor died in Kanto, it means the main body of Kira is based in Kanto. Of course you will be biased towards it, because you KNOW it's true. But that's just baseless bias. It's not going to work in real life. The only reason Light loses is because plot demanded it. The circumstances surrounding Kira makes it impossible to actually come to any conclusions. L makes guesses. He shoots in the dark and somehow always ends up hitting the mark.
