Predictions

The abyss grows deeper every 2000 years. Orth just sank to the 1st layer. Currently the delvers are being slaughtered because they got trapped under cure levels they couldn't handle or are fighting to protect the town as the wild life encroaches.

Oozen is going to catch up with them hoping to find out what the kids did to fuck everything up. Likely gets in a fight with Bonedad along the way.

They will find Lyza who has been searching for the source of the curse's power. She knew this would happen and sent Reg to warn the town.

New plot line will be to destroy the cures at the heart of the abyss.

I might be accused of speed reading here, but I'm a little confused on the details of the curse.

It gets worse as you go down, and can start happening in as little as less than a meter of ascent.

But do you adjust to your new altitude? Like if you were go to up a theoretical staircase in the third layer. If you took it one step at a time, resting for 10+ minutes a step, could you ascend without feeling the effects? Obviously this would be time consuming as fuck, but is that how regular delvers do it?
Also is it ever said what lets a white whistle ascend easier? Just acclimatization or some weird artifacts?

Souls sink, like carbon monoxide. They've slowly built up in the lowest pit of the world, and their presence in those kinds of numbers begins to warp the world them. The pit gets deeper, creatures get more deadly and violent, and the curse is the flow of souls throughout the abyss, getting more packed as you get deeper.

The souls the dead themselves are not malicious, they don't do this on purpose, its more just a natural phenomenon. But once a soul is connected to the mass of others, separating it is extremely difficult for the body. The curse is the body feeling its soul being pulled, like a spoon through molasses. The only way to counteract that pull, is to have a "guardian soul" a person who has sacrificed their soul for yours. Nanachi and Mitty, the canisters and white whistles are all ways to do this.

The bottom of the abyss is impossible to truly describe and ponder. It has no ties to reality as we know it.

Before becoming idolfront, the site was a mysterious sacrificial ground for the white whistle creation ritual. The ritual must have been to do with forcing the curse onto the sacrifice, just like bondrewd's cartridge. The sacrifice must be voluntary to bear the curse for the sake of the other person. Since Prushka's will and love is strong enough and she strongly cares for both bonedad and riko, she was used for both giving the blessing and becoming the white whistle

Ozen's design is so good.

She can go from a normal looking person, to this creature of the abyss so easily. Yet is still recognizably the same person. I don't think the anime really captured it well enough. They tried to, and it worked to some extent, but that first moment when reading the manga, and seeing that mask face with the heavy lines really left an impression on me that the anime didn't.

Half the reason I like MiA so much is that there is a huge amount of lore and background material that is completely unexplored. We don't even really know how a regular delver, let alone a white whistle does things. We just know Rico's reckless straight down approach isn't what most people do.

You could do an entire full length manga about Ozen's adventures before Lyza even hits the scene, let alone after that.

Yeah, I compiled a partial timeline based on the scenes and info we're given, but after the Seeker Camp everything kind of goes to shit and Tsukushi gives very few points of reference for when things are happening in relation to other things.

Riko saying "okaa-san" and reaching out for her hand made me sad in ways the manga hasn't. Mostly in that I haven't really ever felt bad for riko being an orphan, she's such a strong willed protagonist who doesn't cry about her misfortune all day that I almost forgot that her life sucks.
If there comes a moment in the manga when all is lost and she finally just starts bawling over the futility of everything then I'm going to need a tall glass of whiskey and a handgun for sure.
Overall, anime original stuff made me sympathize for riko without feeling cheap.

Fair enough, but considering the relationship Faputa seems to have with him, (and presumably he had with her) I don't see him leaving to bring back "haku". Shouldn't Faputa be his haku?
Or perhaps Riko is not Reg's haku but Lyza's who Reg somehow met and agreed to go get her?
It seems reasonable that there could be multiples of Reg, but I'm positive this is the same one.

As for haku, reg and moth are/were both bad people and planned on kidnapping/stealing someone valuable (by layer 6 standards) so that they could trade it for something. Maybe reg was following lyza around because he thought he could take her. At which point she told him about her daughter who was resurrected, and he changed targets thinking that would be more valuable. Moth is heartbroken because he seems to have forgotten the plan entirely. As for what they needed something valuable for, who knows. Maybe to make it possible for moth to leave layer 6 or for them to gain access to layer 7.
