It is overkill. One Melty Blood would be enough to understand most of the references to it. I agree on Tsukihime, Kagetsu Tohya, FSN, and FHA, though. And read Angel Notes if you want to catch some of the super obscure stuff.

You can watch it without that but roughly 50% or more of the humor will go right over your head, and you may spoil things from the aforementioned titles, which the show may find you wishing to play.

Carnival Phantasm would be better with Lancer Artoria. Time for season 3.

He adapted the source material in an unprofessional way based on his own personal tastes. While it led to some good things like Final Dead Lancer, he also screwed the fuck out of the Tsukihime side of the anime, not to mention Sakura, whose segments he went out of his way to sabotage in order to make her look bad, removing the original jokes in favor of really dumb shit like Sakura punching Rider and saying she wants to be abused by Shinji.

A lot of people aren't taking into account series like Tsukihime are completely boring. You can read the wiki with a lot of these shows and be just fine. (The girls are cute though)

Listen boys, if you really are desperate to watch Carnival Phantasm and you don't want to study up on the moonverse like a maester from GOT I recommend you watch unlimited blade works and read up a little on the Tsukihime universe and you'll have a good time. I'm speaking from experience.

How is the VN game set up? Can you date any character you want the first play through or do you have to open them up every play through? I want to try it but I really don't want to date Sakura for obvious reasons.

It was originally meant to be two game. Firs game with Fate route and UBW. Second game with Sakura route and Illya route. Because of how much the game was going to cost they didn't feel right with it only having two routes, so they added in Sakura's route and put the important Illya parts in it.

Dating Sims are a lot more sandboxy, you're given freedom of choice and events. Something akin to Majikoi is more of a dating sim.

Romance is an important part of Type Moon, but the heroines aren't in love with (You), they're in love with the MC who is a clearly defined character, not a faceless self insert. You're given some choices, but in overall the actions you can do are just what the MC will choose (with some exceptions). Sometimes, you get no choices at all (Bring Illya Back/Bring Illya Back/Bring Illya Back).

Carnival Phantasm isn't even that good. Less than half the segments are actually funny, the changes made to the source material fail to add anything and sometimes outright detract from it, it keeps running certain jokes into the ground, and its overall value as a comedy is just poor.

Carnival Phantasm would've been much better if it just did the slice of life segments of Kagetsu Tohya and Hollow Ataraxia.

The biggest issue with Carnival Phantasm is its poor comedic timing. There are also too many pointless parts that only serve to fuck with the pacing even more. In the Saber maid segment, for instance, Archer's presence is so pointless that you wonder why she's there at all. The Len Gorengers parody wasn't funny to begin with and using the same joke three times in succession felt really unnecessary. The date segment was so predictable that it's impossible to laugh at it. The Back Alley Alliance manzai segments just seem to revel in their mediocrity. The Final Destilancer segment is an unnecessary and, once again, predictable end to a running joke. The volleyball tournament segment was excessively reliant on memes and in-jokes. The worst part was how dull the Necos are, even though they're actually pretty funny in Melty Blood proper. Neco-Bubbles is worthless.

The best parts were the Holy Grail War game show, the race, Saber Lion and Maid Saber. The Tsukihime cast suffered the most and their segments were easily the most boring, even though I was actually looking forward to them more than the Fate cast. Some of the smaller or more subtle jokes concerning them caught my eye though, like Shiki waking up in the middle of the night which was directly inspired from a minor scene from the game, or Shiki fighting a kuma in a forest.

It's a crossover of basically every big of TM canon that existed at that point, so you'd have to watch/read/play just about everything that existed in the canon at the time it aired (2011-2012,) which is insane.

Tsukihime you pretty much have to hunt down and read the visual novel as the anime is universally considered to be such an awful adaptation that the meme is that there is no Tsukihime anime. It's a relatively quick read to do all five routes, though.

Fate/Stay Night you could get away with just watching the ufotable UBW adaptation and understand most references and memes, though playing through all three visual novel routes is still ideal.

I'd say the spinoffs- Kagetsu Tohya, Melty Blood, and Fate/Hollow Ataraxia- aren't nearly as "required."
