But that's what makes her interesting. As for the latter, I've seen far worse. I prefer MCs with inner conflicts, as I feel it adds depth, which is important in the long run.

In Vivid Strike, Rinne (and arguably Miura) was the only character that had any real inner struggles.

I'm of the opinion that Fuuka was in no position to "save" anyone from supposed "self-destruction," when she was hardly developed enough to know what she truly wants. Hell, Einhart had to remind Fuuka what her own goals were halfway into the season, as if she completely forgot. She got much less screen time than Rinne for a reason.

Fuuka's motivation was supposed to be grand - get back friend wife, save her from self destruction.
It might have been a bit lost in the not so well-written screenplay, but in the underlying sujet, that was the intention - grand struggle for the most important thing, akin to when Nanoha wanted to save Feito. Albeit in more modest scale and with more modest means/magics.

I started in on Nanoha earlier this year and finally finished reading Nanoha Vivid and I came away feeling like Corona should have been the main character. As a normal person who wants to try and keep up with literal monsters, I think she has a more interesting character arc than Vivio (who really hasn't had much of anything). Further Corona's Golem-meist arts are really interesting and has room for all kinds of options and neat power-ups. I think her fight against Einhart was one of the best in the franchise. Vivio is alright, but she seems kind of boring in comparison, and if I wasn't already familiar with her from StrikerS I wouldn't have cared all that much about her. I really wish they would do something more with Vivio because rather than feeling like the protagonist she often feels more like a fifth wheel.

Gonna start in on Vivid Strike now. I hope these two new characters are decent.

Miura is the same way, but she's in an even worse state than Corona; Miura is going for the big leagues while not having ancient Belkan lineage and technique. Nor does she have a big golem that she can call upon to hit stuff. She just has hard work and sweat, and she has to hit the monsters who are descendants of ancient Belkan gods among men with her fists.
Unfortunately, Vivid seems extremely intent on proving that lineage > hard work, and continues to dump all over her. I don't even know if she was in the last tournament.

Vivio being the "main character" was a bait and switch from the very beginning. They basically made Einhart the protagonist, but Einhart was a really shitty protagonist because all her issues were self-inflicted and had little to nothing to do with the world around her.

Corona had an actual tangible goal to pursue (keeping up with Vivio), tangible strengths (smart and talented at geomancy/golemancy), and tangible obstacles (being shit physically) that she dealt with in interesting ways (nephelim fist, meist arm). On top of that she is usually the underdog in her fights, and takes somewhat Vita-esque beatings, which makes her more sympathetic than someone like Einhart who has everything handed to her on a silver platter by the plot. She's also the first interesting new form of magic since, what, A's?

I really don't get what happened with her. She's like an actually good mahou shoujo trapped in a moe spinoff. Even Tsuzuki seems to like her to a special degree, considering how much more serious her role is in the original tournament was than Rio, how big her achievements in the team battle were, and her being a yuri doujin artist in the 4koma (author insert?)
