I can only speak for myself and I've only seen the first season, but I kind of liked it and got into it a bit due to how kind of mundane, yet genuine feeling the character's problems were. They were pretty bland and boring on some level, but that kind of made it more believeable for me as they're just kids, so I shouldn't even expect more, though I would've really liked if it made a slightly more serious turn into them prepping properly, maybe having huge clashes with sensei, whom they'd hate for good reason, but the more they actually get to know him, the more they'd start to like him. It ultimately felt kind of brushed away, while it seemed to me like it had a very strong potential to be very interesting aspect of the plot.

Just finished season 1 a couple of days ago. This was one of the very few shows where I wasn't looking for the best girl among the side characters since the main character was so good (Asuka was lovely, though). Something about Kumiko made her incredibly relatable to me, and her fluff and reactions are adorable. The show looks so good and sounds even better.

I kinda get the problem people have with the "yuribaiting". Kyoani goes just a bit too far, but still not far enough. They fail to satisfy the yuri audience, and they manage to weird out the rest too. Knowing beforehand that there is no actual yuri in this, some of the scenes between Kumiko and Reina were pretty excessive and out of place.

With the male childhood friend being so completely boring, and yet the most obvious romantic interest for Kumiko, I don't think Kumiko and Reina ending up together would be that bad. Then again, I still have an OVA, a movie and the entire second season to watch, so maybe I'll get to change my mind.

Kumiko Oumae falls in love with Reina Kousaka.

Unable to confess, Kumiko is gifted by a hibike ex machina with the girl's phone number. Never minding the strange area code, she immediately calls her, and is overjoyed to find out that she has a crush on her as well.

But, the next day, when she recounts the previous day's confessions to Reina, she only looks at her with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, she finds out that the girl she called is not the same girl she fell in love with. In fact, she doesn't exist in this universe at all. She is Reina's alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with the MC's own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of her crush.

Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. I've been meaning to write something up but I havent finished reading the new novel yet, no free time but I did get through about a 1/3 of it so I could talk a bit about the new characters at least.

The novel starts almost exactly the same way the first novel started but from the perspective of 2nd year Kumiko, which I find really interesting. So while 1st year Kumiko was looking at the club from the outside at the start, 2nd year Kumiko and everyone else was hustling to get ready to play the concert you see in first part of episode 1. Same goes for the way the 2nd episode plays out, 1st year Kumiko was trying not to go to the lower bass since she didnt want to play Euphonium but 2nd year Kumiko noticed that no one wanted to join them and they were thinking of abducting people.

Speaking of the club, 40+ new students joined because of Kitauji making it to nationals so the club ballooned to a massive 89 member count. The majority of them are all experienced students too so I'm excited to see how auditions go since only 55 can get through.

Yuuko is an incredibly good president since shes a great orator, her speeches are very moving but she goes overboard a lot which is where Natsuki keeps her in check. Natsuki's novel appearance now matches her anime appearance, that is she had short hair in the novel but grew it out. Reina is the new class Madonna and she does the introduction to the trumpet section and all the new members are taken away with our beautiful she is. Also she gets jealous that Yuuko gets to spend time with Taki.

4 people end up joining the bass section and they're paired up with their respective main character. So Kumiko has a Eupho kouhai, Midori has a contrabass kouhai and Hazuki has two tuba kouhai. Midori actually has a lot of great scenes because she enters this onee-san mode, protecting her kouhai from bullying but at the same time scolding him a lot for being apathetic or rude

Starting with the obvious is Kanade, she's kind of a bitch to put it bluntly. Specifically, Kumiko describes her with a four word kanji 慇懃無礼 (inginburei) which means "superficially polite but rude in intent ". Kanade speaks in super polite tense always to everyone including Kumiko, but she uses it in a way where it seems like shes talking down to you, and she has no actual respect for seniority, she only cares about playing the euphonium. If this reminds you of someone shes basically freshmen Asuka. Kanade actually came to Kitauji to become Asuka's prodigee but Asuka graduated so she's sticking to Kumiko now. Kanade's profile is interestingly the opposite of Asuka though, where Asuka likes people she can use, Kanade likes people who are useless.

Midori describes Kanade as a pet cat who knows how to get people to pet her.

As far as I've gotten so far, she's taken to teasing Tsutomu who is the new contrabass and I'll get into him next. Tsutomu-kun has a name complex the same with Midori has one but it relates to hating his grandfather. Kanade's really passive aggressive about this with him and Midori has to break up their fight.

Kumiko at this point in time doesn't really like Kanade all that much, if anything she might find her kind of scary.

next up is Tsukinaga Tsutomu. Tsutomu is literally a trap. When Midori first brings him to the group during, she says she found a boy club member but people looked at Tsutomu and nobody realized he was a boy. Kumiko thinks that Tsutomu is probably cuter than most of the girls in the club and goes on to say that if he wore a girl uniform, he'd probably be considered a beauty.

Tsutomu plays the contrabass and is kind of a parallel to Midori. He went to an all boys school which was part of the same circle of private schools Midori went to. Also he has a huge complex about his family name but I haven't gotten to the cause although its obvious its his grandafther who is a famous musician that he hates. Tsutomu's school is known for having elite sports team and not for their music department so Tsutomu might've been forced into playing the contrabass.

As for his personality, he's a male version of Natsuki. He's always sleeping or relaxing somewhere, his default position in the club is Natsuki's old window spot. He's very calm and chill to the point where Hazuki has to periodically check if he's even paying attention. the other two new members I haven't read too much of so far. Suzuki Satsuki aka Sacchan is a taller Midori. She's a tiny ball of sunshine with two pigtails and might have abandonment issues I'm picking up on.

She's one of the two new tuba players but played tuba throughout middle school. She's childhood friends with the other tuba player Mirei. Midori describes her as a loveable small dog, think shih tzu.

Miirei is kind of intimidating since shes quiet and tall. She hasnt had any scenes as far as I've read so far but that's because shes been avoiding making friends with anyone. Her hobbies say she enjoys reading seinen manga and from her personality so far I'm guessing shes the "tall cool girl but likes stuffed animals and kittens" archetype. Probably not though since these characters are usually quite nunanced. Midori's describes Mirei as a hedgehog who is always on alert. Also her profile mentions she has low self esteem.

I haven't really gotten to the other two girls yet but this is Kohinata Yume. Yume went to the same middle school as Kumiko and Reina and was in the band with them. Kumiko doesn't remember Yume at all but Yume looks up to Kumiko and even came to her for advice if she should join the band at all, which is pretty awkward for Kumiko after finding out who she was.

Mizore is part of the plot in this volume, she actually narrates the prologue where its pointed out that Nozomi still doesnt really understand her feelings for her yet but Mizore's content with just being together.

I only read the part where it was established so I don't know what clients she'll be getting besides her bandmates but Yuuko puts Kumiko in charge of the dealing with the first years, with help from Tomoe Kabe who is a 3rd year trumpeter now. Kumiko handles the bandmates who have experience playing and Tomoe handles the complete beginners. And well its pretty amusing what Tomoe thinks about Kumiko, we basically see how the other club members see Kumiko. Tomoe thinks Kumiko is super serious, honest person who can solve anything since they all saw Kumiko fixing the problems from last year without really knowing how it went down.
