Gurren Lagann is a prime example of a show that was only recognized for the fact that it focused on animation over story.It has helped set the framework for the flood of those style anime we've gotten in the past decade and that mindset in anime watchers who think just because something is pretty it's good. It literally lobotomized the mecha genre, which while always a toy selling vehicle on a budget, can no longer function or get off the ground because idiots always point to Gurren Lagann. Not even Evangelion managed to kill the genre, in fact Evangelion breathed LIFE into it. Gurren Lagann didn't redefine or inspire anything, it simply used a bunch of established ideas, made it pretty and basically paved the soil for that genre to grow with a massive barrier of entry where all casual mecha viewers will look for now is animation quality.

As for Studio Trigger, they attempt to sell themselves as "unique" or "counterculture" despite their completely generic or no effort animation style. They are called the savior of animation, while not pushing the animation genre forward. They are only further stagnating the genre into people who watch anime "ironically" or people who only watch anime that they is good, but is simply generic reattempts to use old ideas with a modern coat of paint. Like with GL, they are not pushing the genre forward, they are pretending to for the sake of making a profit by preying on idiots. Thus they all deserve to die. Monogatari may be bland and tasteless most of the time, but at least in certain instances it's been able to a vehicle for pushing animation forward through creative choices in direction an animation. Something Trigger and GL never did, they settled on simply "make it flashy and look pretty" with no actual meaning or artistic direction.
