Ten years of war. Ten years of barely maintained stability slowly slipping into ruin because Britain had the unfortunate circumstance of being the last bastion of the Age of the Mystery, and thus that contradiction ended up lowly killing them.

The great thing about Garden of Avalon is how it completely fucks Saber over in regards to the Matter of Britain.

Saber herself, being the incarnation of a dragon, was just as much a reason for Britain's ruin as Vorgtigern was. As long as she existed, Britain could not prosper. At the same time, though, without a powerful king, Britain would fall to ruin even sooner. So Saber herself was a double-edged sword. Committing suicide would have solved nothing because the kingdom would have fallen that much sooner. But as long as she lived, the kingdom could not heal.

This is from Garden of Avalon. The dragon fight was earlier in her career.

She lost because Britain was fucked one way or the other. Saber hoped that, at the very least, its fall could be a peaceful and painless one. Unfortunately, while Saber was on an expedition to Rome, Mordred threw a hissy fit and started a massive coup. The people were dissatisfied with Saber after ten years of war and weak harvest. For her own part, Saber was a very efficient king. The problem is that even though she did produce results, the people of Britain weren't satisfied. They thought that Saber would be able to bring instant fortune to the land, but things weren't that simple.

After ten years of war, countless lives lost and children crying from starvation, the people had enough. When Mordred started her coup, half the country ended up siding with her thanks to that dissatisfaction. In the end, the fall of Britain was a bloody and destructive one.

In their duel, Saber got the upper hand against Mordred and inflicted a mortal blow. However, Mordred had a strong curse put upon her that allowed her to strike a lethal wound onto Saber even with a foot in the grave.
