Anti-Spiral didn't underestimate it, the reason they fought on its level (whatever level that happened to be at the time as the battle progressed) was because they knew that spiral energy is specifically geared toward seeing insurmountable odds, and surmounting them anyway.

By not going as large as they could at the beginning, they limit how fuckhuge Gurren Lagann can become. If Gurren Lagann grows fuckhuge anyway, they grow to the same size immediately to try to cause despair. Despair being the Spiral races weakness.

While I would say that STTGL has about as good a chance against EGD as anything ever imagined, I say that it loses or at best ties because of the limit imposed by Spiral Nemesis, which it will almost certainly hit battling against EGD.

Spiral Nemesis occurs at a point when Spiral Life evolves into galaxies. The universe would then suffer a collapse that would wipe out the spiral life and the universe as well.

From this we can learn that the limitation of the Spiral Race at their apex.
Either the Spiral Race loses sapience and just become comatose galaxies, or, even as these galactic entities, they lack the power to withstand or circumvent the universal collapse.

Either way, the limitation is clear: the universe is their limitation.
Anything able to operate beyond a single universe would naturally supersede STTGL and the Spiral Race as a whole.

It's a visual effect of the galaxies being sucked into the turbine that is the Anti-Spiral's and STTGL's drill collision.
