Yup, the first few volumes of Naruto were really damn good. Good characters, good plot development, good world building. But as it went on it got worse and worse. Character's became more flat and 2D and were never developed further than they had at the beginning of the series. Plot boiled down to power levels and asspulling.

I'll agree with this, I used to like Naruto when I was a kid but I think I started disliking it when the character's attacks got flashier so the fights became less interesting to read, I think that's the same reason I stopped liking Bleach.

Not an unpopular opinion, OP. There was a reason so many got hooked on it early. It started off good, fairly interesting even. But you could tell the author got sick of it as he turned it into unredeemable trash.

I'm watching this "Kai" version of part 1 Naruto and I'm enjoying myself quite a bit. I'm surprised at how much given how over-familiar I am with the series.

The music is great, the fighters are great, there's surprisingly solid characters, and the plot is somewhat interesting with nice developments. It's amazing how much the ball was dropped later.

Kakashi kind of jumped around (especially given that so called '6th hokage' title despite Tsunade not being dead)

Jiraiya was able to at least get the fuck out of that manga before it and his character plummeted (AND THANK GOD HE WASN'T RESURRECTED AS A NINJA ZOMBIE)

There are a few, but sadly most aren't quite used properly (Might Guy's 'sacrifice' to try and defeat the invincible Madara Uchiha comes to mind)

Sasuke went full psycho as seen with the scary af psycho face. I think the biggest problem with him was he just couldn't let go of his past. Kakashi told him to grow the fuk up but in the end Sasuke was a victim of failed guidance from Itachi as well as mistakes made by Konoha after Kyuubi attacked.

The animation is bad in a lot of parts objectively speaking.
Sure, its fluid and has a lot of movement, it feels fast like it should, I'll give it that.
But characters are off-model in many parts where the off-model or distortion is not justified. It would be justified if the distortion was a technique to add more impact to, lets say, a really fucking big blow to pain, but instead it just distorts randomly and it feels out of place.
That being said, many of the hits and punches really lack impact, its hard to explain without a video or something, but the frames which are between the preparation of the hit and the actual hits are far too many, so the punches and shit don't feel like they have an impact.
