It's a masterful manga that does an excellent job portraying the atrocities of WW2 from many different sides and also manages to be a scathing criticism of Japanese culture and government at the time. It's no surprise it never got an anime adaptation.

it's a more impressive thriller than Monster, a more touching WW2 drama than Grave of the Fireflies, and the most hardhitting and brutally honest manga i've ever read.

My only issue with it was the weird conspiracy theory ending involving Hitler's death. What the fuck was that all about?
