I thought that was such a cool fight. Usually it feels like people totally forgot what the Sharingan is capable of even from the beginning. Stealing Naruto to make the handsigns for his fireballs and taking on a dozen clones at once like nothing was super cool. It's probably the single good Sasuke fight since Shippuden since he doesn't immediately pull out the Susano-o and shoot arrows while totally invincible or black flame dudes to instant kill them.

He was never portrayed as bad at it, except for comedic purposes here and there, though he gets markedly better in part two, especially after his sage training. By the end of the manga, he's at least as good as Sasuke (minus kenjutsu of course), but below Guy and Lee in my opinion.

naruto and minato's styles take it into account, since rasengan is sealless so there's no way to interrupt it. he and sasuke learn one-handed seals a few months after their final battle too, so it stopped being an issue. plus naruto can sprout at least nine extra hands from anywhere on his body, so really him getting delayed there was just him trying not to escalate until sasuke used his rinnegan

obito pulled the same trick on kakashi, interrupting his signs and stealing his hands to complete the ones for a fireball

But it's not really the best animated fight. There's a number of fights in Naruto that beats it by a country mile, animation wise. I do agree it's up there in the series in terms of emotional involvement and catharsis though.

he can fire regular rasengan as a laser, rasenshuriken is already a ranged attack, he can grab dudes towards him with luffy arms or just throw clones. he doesn't really need to innovate. and sasuke later started paring down and trimming the fat, we never see chidori senbon or nagashi again after he figures out susanoo shoots arrows and the black fire is both shapeable and hitscan

The Sage form should've been Naruto's final powerup imo. I absolutely love powerups that aren't cool at first glance. Like, Frog form. Frogs are lame as fuck. But it ended up being cool.

What really ruinsthis fight for me is how little tension there is because of how much Naruto holds back in it and how un-threatening Sasuke is, personally I believe a final battle in a shounen battle manga should be a massive challenge for the protagonist with an enemy that seems nigh impossible to beat and takes everything the MC has to beat him, but in this case it's not true.

Sasuke is trying his upmost to kill Naruto and using everything thing in his arsenal while Naruto just easily tanks or blocks everything without even countering. I mean base mode Naruto forces Sasuke into a corner so he has to use his rinnegan with a handful of clones and two base rasengans, if that isn't a power imbalance I don't know what is; Also Sasuke gets a massive asspull powerup in the form of his bijuu susanoo which Naruto casually counters with a sage mode infused Kurama, this makes Sasuke look like a pathetic excuse for an antagonist considering he can't even overpower Naruto with a massive power upgrade. The only good part of this fight is the drunken fist fight at the end (which unsurprisingly is the part with the most tension)

one trick pony is a bit of a stretch

like people get on his case for not being able to do random one-off stuff like light a campfire or make a waterfall, but even the much loved side characters like shikamaru and lee really only have the one or two gimmicks as well. he's also the only ninja who relies heavily on basics like kunai/shuriken, transformations, misdirection, and clones, so in a sense he's actually pretty classical as far as magic folklore ninjas go
