From a utilitarian perspective, Yugi winning Duelist Kingdom is much better than Kaiba winning Duelist Kingdom. Yugi would free his grandpa and Mokuba, and give the prize money to Jounouchi for his sister's operation. Kaiba would have freed Mokuba, declined the prize money, and told Yugi and his grandpa to go fuck themselves. Atem was trying to act in everyone's best interests and Kaiba threw a fit. Kaiba also hadn't beaten Yugi a single time up to this point and was going to lose yet again but still stubbornly believed he was the best man to defeat Pegasus.

He wouldn't have done it anyway, the lying fuck. It would be totally contrary to his entire character to willingly leave Mokuba to fend for himself in the world. He just knew Yugi would believe him because that's the kind of guy Yugi is. Atem saw through his shit because he's smarter.
