I liked the first season the best.

They definitely have deeper interactions than just banter. One of the reasons why I love their relationship so much is the fact that Lafiel recognizes that she very deeply cares for Jinto and reciprocates his affection where she can. I'm not finished with the whole series yet but a recent example for me was when Jinto carried Lafiel to her bed. Even when she was racing to the bridge during general quarters she still paused briefly to smile and thank him for that. Truly the best tsundere in anime.

Which is precisely what makes the season so special. While CotS was about getting to know and growing fond of eachother, BotSII is about the pain of being separated and the thoughts of the respective characters. It also has the by far most impactful "baka" of the entire show. Its "baka"
quality over quantity. I wish Xebec would just turn novel 4 and 5 into a fucking show already. Or hand it to Artland so they have something to do and the series doesnt look like shit for once.
