Honestly I barely pay attention to the actual gambling. I'm mostly in this for the character designs and super top notch directing.

If the stakes are too high in a story, to the point the story would end if MC loses, then it becomes more than obvious that the MC won't lose. There can't be any tension when that happens, it feels like there are no stakes at all...

Also, if the opponent loses and don't face the punishment, it too makes everything feels like there are no real stakes. It's a bit annoying that they keep teasing us with bodily harm, death, etc, but nobody actually suffers any of this.
