In a situation where you have nothing but pure numbers and no other information, yes.
The problem with that philosophy lies in knowing whom you have to kill to save god knows whom.
Say you live in a country with 20 million people. Would you kill all of them to save 20 million and 1 or even 21 million from another country? Including your family, friends, colleagues and whom not. There's no way you'd ever be able to rationalize a choice like that unless you're seriously fucked up in the head, just like Kerry was.
Shit, you can expend that to argue that sometimes it's okay to let more people die just to protect the ones that are actually close to you.

Say you kill 3 billion mothers and "save" their 3 billion babies.
Or on a more abstract level, let's say the sacrifice lot includes everyone involved in or with knowledge of agriculture.
Say among the dead is every politician and in general everyone involved in management?
In any of these cases, you haven't really saved anyone. Humanity is objectively and quantifiably worse off because of your actions.

All he knows is that the Einzberns told him the Holy Grail is a legitimate miracle that could grant any wish, and he had little reason to doubt them considering they could demonstrate their sorcery trait with wish-granting (which is basically the ability to cast things without the knowledge of the magic itself).
