That's part of the Magician's archetype, but yeah they were annoying until their characters grew up. I prefer Persona 3's persona upgrade to their ultimate forms because at least it happens due to their reaction to the story's progression of the truth. Then again it makes sense that Souji's part was integral to each party members' upgrade since he was one of the people who can see the truth and in turn help others see it.
