The 0079 movies remove all the shit pacing and stupid filler they packed into 0079, there's really no reason not to just watch the movies.
This is coming from a guy who actually watched the entirety of 0079, then the movies, lest you think I'm some movie-only fag.

Season 1 was really good though, except Saji's circlejerk. Then season 2 came in which is very mediocre if not bad then the movie came in which is a disaster.
Too bad, I really like the designs compared to other series.
I'm still salty about Gundam X.

Try watching the rest of the franchise and you'll start seeing 00 with better eyes.

The only way to have an honest opinion on gundam is to watch most of them, and find out how they work.
The most important ones to watch are 0079, Zeta, CCA, and the UC OVA series. ZZ explains the newtype bullshit that happens in CCA, but you don't necessarily need to watch it.
The best show to follow the gundam formula is Code Geass.

Its arguably the best gundam if you look at the general theme and idea of it. Also finally a no-nonsense gundam pilot, which is what I really wanted out of this series for so long, after all these years.
Season 1 is among the upper echelon's of gundam.
