I'll explain it for you. Hitagi is brave and faces all her problems face on. This is what attracts Araragi to her first and foremost. Hanakawa is a coward who runs from her problems, pretends they don't exist, blames herself then uses those same problems to elicit sympathy in others. WHICH is too fucking similar to Araragi. THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT ARARAGI HATES ABOUT HIMSELF.

Rewatch the whole Math arc again. This is the source of araragi's self loathing which lead him to attempt suicide via vampire in the subway in kizu, and the core of his problem in bake where he thinks dying to solve someone else's fucking problems is a good trade. He knew Sodachi was being beaten by her parents and KNEW the teacher had cheated on the test, yet he ran away from both issues, letting Sodachi take the fall for the test and ignoring sodachi's home situation leaving her in hell for 3 years, though she was BEGGING him in a convoluted and round about way to make him help her and tell his parents, he simply wouldn't do it and ran away. This cowardice haunted him all through high school and is the reason why he hates himself, it's why he's suicidal, it's why he refuses to make friends (he blames his weakness on being friends with others, he's at fault so he blames it on having friends "weakening" his sense of humanity. Yeah, that bullshit happened.) So think about this again. Hanakawa represents everything he hates about his own weakness, while Senjougahara represents all the strength of character he WISHES he had.

His choice was natural. It's also why everyone else thinks he would have went for hanakawa, even senjougahara thought so. Because they're so fucking alike it's terrifying. And it's exactly because they're alike he'd never go with her.

Unironically, Monogatari is the only anime that has repeatedly managed to get an emotion reaction from me. I don't even know why, it's a shit show, but for some reason it always pulls on my heartstrings.

the series has a high bar which makes it hard for a lot of people to watch. 1) the whole show is shot like a french new wave movie from the 60's. In fact i'd say the series is an homage to french new wave. 2) the art style is clearly "pop" (think andy warhol). 3) it's a studio shaft in all it's shaftyness, which means lots of Showa-era references and japanese things no one gets if you're not born in japan 4) NisiOisiN wrote the story as an otaku for otakus. 5) NisiOisiN wrote it - PERIOD... which means lots of dialog, lots of kanji/name puns which do not translate at all, and lots of awkward otaku references which you may or may not get depending on how deep into anime you are. 6) its not a good anime to marathon. watch a couple at a time. digest and continue.

So you're not "wrong" to not enjoy the anime. Personally I think marrying NisiOisiN's script to Shaft and French New Wave plus Pop art was a stroke of genius; the art direction in the anime is worthy of awards, as the backgrounds can often tell you more about the plot then the dialogue. Shinbo/Shaft has always been extraordinarily strong at making dense talk happy scripts work on screen, and they don't fail here either. Overall it will come down to taste. If you can parse through the dense text, and see through the beautiful visuals you might just find an emotionally deep and rewarding meta story about growing up. I've been watching this anime since it aired in 2009. It's been 8 years, almost 100 episodes (including the 3 part movie) and I found the most recent released episodes just as emotionally satisfying and poignant as the first.

I think people tend to go overboard with artistic analysis of the series, but one thing that doesn't get enough credit is how much audio contributes to making the show so compelling. The soundtrack takes scenes that would be mediocre and makes them spine-tingling, and the voice acting and direction really carries the characters.

While I like Sodachi's character in general, I didn't like this arc at all. One thing I like about monogats is that a lot of the underlying trauma that drives the supernatural hijinks is very toned down.

Cat had an abusive childhood but it wasn't over-the-top roald dahl tier cartoonishness, her parents just didn't show her any love. Snek is coddled and treated like a child by her parents and isn't allowed to grow into an adult. Ragu feels self-loathing and self-doubt over his failings and questions his moral fiber but doesn't descend into wrist-slitting emo wangst. Even crab's rape trauma was just attempted rape, nothing really extravagant.

It makes the underpinning trauma very relatable. It doesn't feel like "movie trauma" where it has to be BIG and EMOTIONAL in order to fuck you up. It's subtle.

Sodachi's "my mother turned into an skellington but I went nuts and didn't realise" doesn't feel subtle. It feels like movie trauma. If you compare it to Sodachi Fiasco, which is a much more genuine account of someone who is severly neurotic in a very realistic way the contrast is so stark. I wish her first arc was more grounded.
