>mahou shoujo with a surreal/dreamlike narrative, cute girls, intense action and great animation
>flops

Explain this
>>
no marketing
>>
>>161380147
I really enjoyed the first 6 episodes or so, but it got really boring and confusing by the end. Lost its "fun" aspect to push an uninteresting narrative. Thats my two cents.
>>
May have flopped but I enjoyed it. Also want her to sit on my face
>>
>>161380147
People have shit taste and would rather spend money on the latest mobage tie-in
>>
Needs doujins too
>>
>>161380147

What >>161380179 said.

Also: a lack of big names working on the show (M.A.O. and maybe ZAQ are probably the highlights); a relatively new studio that had (and still has) no non-flopping anime (though Princess Principal could change that); an "unusual" artstyle that not all could appreciate; and perhaps most importantly, pacing and story issues that probably turned off most people.
>>
>>
>>161380202
>and confusing by the end
This right here is why modern anime is so shit. This is the sort of people you have to write shows for. "Confusing" of all possible words.
>>
>>
>>161380147
It was all style and no substance.
>>
>>161380356
Would convoluted have worked a little better?
>>
>>161380147
It failed to re-capture the magic of episode 3 and the plot got boring. I also felt the writing took a dive after episode 3 or 4. Flip Flappers is a prime example of wasted potential. It's wasn't bad, but it could have been amazing.
>>
>>161380369
So was TTGL but that was a massive success. Granted, that came out in a different era.
>>
A beautifuly animated story about cute girls going down a different rabbit hole and finding magical gems on a weekly basis was fun.

But when you drop the production value of everything coming into the finale and inject a converted tone shifting ending, people are gonna be disappointed.

>muh plot
You probably never liked the show to begin with if some pacing issues and weaker animation that still is better than 90% of what was airing that season "ruined" it.
>>
>>161380147

It was too smart for the retarded average anime fan to understand, but not serious enough in tone to catch the interest of the fedora tipping "serious anime fans" who are still jizzing themselves over madoka. The happy yuri end also contributed to the poor reception the show received. People don't want to see lesbians being happy, they want them to die or come to a miserable end.

It's a great anime, but it'll never be popular. It's already a /u/ classic, and it'll be a "niche hipster anime with interesting art" for everyone else in about 3-4 years once the hate dies down.

1. The writer *who is also the co-creator) got sacked halfway;
2. Shitty episodic subplot to the detriment of the overreaching plot that needed much more coherence than it is;
3. Some in-between quality issues;
4. Too ambitious for the human resources they had, which led to many problems, including point 3.

Yuri doesn't sell.
>>
>>161383501
There is a love confession, though.

If "a kiss" is needed to solidify something as yuri, there'd likely be only 10 or so yuri anime in existance. Sailor Uranus and Neptune never kissed, but you'd be laughed at in modern fandom if you denied their relationship.

It's not that they're stupid. It's just that there really aren't very many full-blown obvious lesbo shows out there. Most of the time, potential yuri goes nowhere and is ultimately just fanservice. Flip Flappers had a love confession and a happy ending for the characters, which is good enough for a lot of people.

Because after the thin veneer of dreamlike surrealism peeled away in the second half the sheer mediocrity of the boring, generic anime story it was built upon became too obvious to ignore. Because it was planned from the beginning as a sci-fi story, though this doesn't really derive this show of its fantastic elements. PI is still largely unexplained, just the way to access that place is known and explained via sci-fi elements. What you envisioned this show should have been obviously doesn't align with the creators vision and while you have every right to complain about that, you must realize that it's poor form to critisize a show for things it never was, never will be and never was planned to be and only exists in an ideal, perfect form inside your head, which is based on your very own subjective taste.

It was rushed, the amazing animation went full on QUALITY at moments during the end battle, lots of leads and hints lead no where. It felt like the last three episodes should have been an entire season 2 to themselves.

Its not the ending conclusion itself, its how it was handled. It took something amazing, and ended poorly. While Its still above and beyond most seasonal shows, it became a huge dissapointment because of that.
This is just my personal opinion, and I would love a season 2 with more fun adventures and the like.

The first half is amazing, and had it in my top ten. The second half I hated, not of its own accord, but because of how it related to the first. Its a solid show, wouldnt say "medicore" like shit posters, but its far from great. Its a seasonal show that was pretty.

He conveniently forgot handwaved stuff such as the importance of consequence of child Cocona, Elpis, etc., that someone raised back when it aired (particularly the scene where Mom flipped out and went on rampage). Nobody properly argued to that, the only responses are blatant hand-wavings ("it's not necessary to explain that!") and "i-it makes sense within the Jungian psyche" shit. It doesn't fucking matter if it's DEEP or not, because the one thing that we're talking about is it's basic plot aka what initially appears to be for the audience. The surface and the foundation of anything before other interpretative layer can be sufficiently grounded and not nonsensical handwaves.

On the side of the 10 people who were actually watching it it fell out flat of the tremendous expectations we generated during the first 6 or so episodes, it tried too be too ambitious and failed miserably.

Why no more than 10 people actually watched it, had objectively more to do with coming from an unknown studio, no AAA staff involved, zero marketing, unappealing childish watercolor art, and the fact that there were other bigger shows airing that season for this experiment to get any traction to begin with.

This feels wrong.

No... it pretty much had a better overarching script.

Flip Flappers had great individual episodes but flopped under the weight of its ambitions. Seeing the show turn into an End of Evangelion rip-off with pedobait to distrct from it was the most insulting thing I've seen... ...outside of the entirety of Eromanga-sensei.

>forced drama yurishit was something nobody wanted.
If you talk about 6+ episodes it was rather forced heterodrama including the whole mother x daddy thing and how they meet and how that influenced current Cocona.

The first half having the yuri themed adventures in alien words was actually better before they introduced the boring parents hetshit drama deal.

The director was an outdated otaku dork who thought new otaku still like that old dated shit he presented.
