Saiyan pride. He never has a moment as egregious as Vegeta letting Cell absorb 18 but he still gives a lot of leeway to his opponents.

It's never been more obvious than in the current arc, instead of being as efficient as possible to ensure the survival of his universe, which is only at risk because of him to begin with, he's casually fucking about and even helping his enemies just because he wants to have a good fight with them.

He's not one for meaningless slaughter. He had a huge kill count for most of Dragon Ball, but that was Red Ribbon and Piccolo combined, two groups that were hellbent on conquest and directly involved in the death of someone he cared about. He just seems to be a bit iffy when it comes to relationships that extend past being friends. He's definitely proud of his sons and does care about Chi Chi, but given the opportunity to fight and train with someone stronger gets him all pumped up and ready to leave.

The reason why how Goku was a much better person and the story is vary serious until Buu is because there were editors controlling an directing Toriyama. Cell saga and Freiza saga are both product of assistance form the editors.
It's not even because the American or Japanese dub, there were difference yes, but in both cases, Goku is much heroic and good than he is from Buu saga to now in super.
Toriyama want Goku to be like this instead of a heroic good man editors want him to be , so once he got full in charge, Goku become what he is today.

He literally then let the fucking genocidal madman that wiped out an entire city and killed his friends, some that couldnt be revived to their knowledge at this point - so perma death, live. He told Krillan to let him go and not finish the madman so he can fight him again. This was moments after he attempted to blow up the earth if goku didnt knock the gallick beam back.

He could have finished cell at any time, but stopped to let gohan do it. even gave a senzu bean to cell to power him up further and nearly cost the world everything. Just to have a good fair fight with a villain that would wipe them all out.

Later he let buu live instead of beating him when he knew he was strong enough and watched him wipe out all earth and nearly cost the world.

Hes just a battle maniac using a moral high ground as an excuse to fight stronger people.

No he couldn't. Also I'm not advocating that Goku was Superman or a perfect moral being being pre Super, just that that moment was his most "mature" moment. It doesn't seem like posturing either because he's thinking it to himself and it's how he really feels rather than telling other people. I mean of course he lets Vegeta go, but the fact that he actually felt remorse and some obligation to protect Earth from Vegeta says something.

There was also the fact that refused to kill people even when Raditz threatened his son, and was willing to kill his own brother because it was necessary. Well I guess when you can argue that Vegeta wasn't a threat anymore and Raditz was that's why he needed to be neutralized, but doesn't that make him look more like a Superman character?

Goku couldn't have beaten Cell at anytime. He spent a good majority of the saga out of commission due to a heart attack. By the time Cell achieved Perfect form, he simply lacked the power to overwhelm Cell's regeneration and had confidence that Gohan's hidden power would be enough to eradicate Cell. Goku's only flaw was not telling anyone about the plan.

In the case of Majin Buu, It's a combination of bad judgement on the part of the Supreme Kai, Vegeta, Gotenks, Gohan, Piccolo, and a gunman that allowed Buu to become a threat. Goku realized that Buu didn't know any better and wouldn't be a threat if he stopped listening to Babidi.

He was using the match as an excuse. Goku didn't want to kill Piccolo because that meant Kami had to die too and the Dragon Balls would vanish forever or are people forgetting this plot element?
