Since so many secondaries seem to be confused, not just in thread but in general nowadays. Here is the Truth behind the Grail War for dummies:

a) the "War" is actually a multi-layered ruse
b) the first ruse is that the grail's "wish granting" power isn't supposed to be some generalized any wish you want kind of thing. There is a very specific reason it was created the way it was
c) Servants are screwed, in the Grail War as planned no Servant will ever get their wish realized because the completion of the Grail require all seven heroes to be sacrificed to it. Hence the Command Seals, the plan is to kill your 6 competitors and then force your own servant to sodoku to complete the ritual.
d) The Einzberns, Makiri, and Tohsaka set up this ritual and always planned to be the ones to win it. Any other magus is just an unknowing sacrifice. Their "wish" is to use the power of the Grail to open a path to the Origin/Void/Akasha for a second and grasp the "Truth of the Universe" within.
e) The last and biggest secret is that two of the major families are being played by the last (or rather first) one. This is all the Einzbern's plot, the others are there has "helpers" they plan to back stab ASAP. And they aren't looking for general "enlightenment" in Akasha but something very specific: Their lost True Magic [Heaven's Feel]. And so at the end of the day the whole system is a basket of lies and deceit set up so that a family of inbred German Magicians long fallen to become mere Magi can reclaim their lost technique.

Its possible due to the Einzbern's sorcery trait, which they intend to use to regain 3rd Magic in the first place. Regardless, if you managed to cuck them out of it, the mana stored in the lesser grail is enough to grant any wishes you want, assuming you have the means to obtain it (think of it as inheriting money. If it can be purchased, you can have it).

You're making it sound like it was against all odds. Yes, he had technological disadvantage, pretty much his entire army consisted of Cavalry, which gave him a HUGE advantage over other armies on any battlefield. Yes, he had a huge empire, but beyond that, he didn't really have many achievements. Point is, he wasn't invincible. He lost. I used Alexander as an example because he also had a huge empire, and he didn't lose. Servants need fighting power. If a Grand Servant has lost fights, while a normal servant didn't, that kind of undermines the whole point of making a "Grand" servant.

Historical figures are not perfect, thus they're not suited to be the perfect example of a Class. If they're going to make a Grand Rider, a mythological figure like Merlin and KH is the best way to go about it, as it establishes their strength as the best much clearly.
