Nichijou was one cour too long

I remember being on /a/ when Nichijou first aired, not a lot of people found it funny other than the moments where KyoAni would blow the whole budget on a deer fighting sequence.


I guess maybe the subs didn't do the comedy justice? Maybe some of it didn't translate well?

It just wasn't funny. Even the Japanese fans didn't find it funny. It was a very specific type of humor repeated over and over again, so only a small group will like it. Whereas most successful comedy series have a lot more variety in comedy to appeal to a bigger audience.

They started the second season while the first season was airing. When the first season didn't do well in BD sales, they decided to cut the second season short. But they had already completed 11 episodes so they just aired 10 of them and released the last one as a BD special.
