That's only true worldwide, not in Japan.
It's only more popular in the former due to overseas marketing, to which iM@S is apparently allergic to because they reduse to do it.

Love Live is mainly an anime franchise that penetrated the overseas market due to the moe wave. iM@S is a video game franchise mainly limited to Japan as a whole and only gained notable overseas traction with the 2011 anime (Xenoglossia wasn't anything notable).

In its peak LL was truly more famous than iM@S but because the succeeding batches only aped what the original did, most of the casualfags didn't migrate to the newer ones. And SIF is just being played out of loyalty nowadays.
