They were given an hour and a half slot but the autograph line was so messed up, KuboSayoHiramatsu ensured everyone got an autograph and stayed over half an hour late. So we only had an hour panel.

This was because yesterday the Afest staff cut the autograph line 15 minutes before the panel and the creators were very unhappy they couldn't sign everyone. Afest were being real assholes.

Besides that the panel was nice, if a bit strange because of the dub actors. Sayokan was very shy and even initially she was like "um, do I have to answer?" but everyone in the audience cheered so she became more talkative.

The most important part was near the end of the panel where Sayokan opened up about how despite being a director and staying "objective" for the sake of the story, she ended up identifying with Yuuri. The reason was she was losing interest in anime, it felt like she wasn't able to work on what she wanted to do, and she felt worthless in her personal career. But figure skating became important to her and so, YOI became an all-or-nothing thing for her. She had tried to present it to different producers so many times and got rejected, so she perservered with Kubo & Hiramatsu, and without them YOI would not have happened at all. It was really touching.

I do think there's a bit of Baldfat in both Kubo and Sayo. Sayo is a trailblazer but YOI was her first commerical success, and she's quiet and reserved. Kubochan is more outspoken but she also was pushed beyond her limits writing for YOI and it was her first time working on an anime. They're perfect for each other.
