GX had an even worse problem of "just a series of stuff that happens" with the gear-destruction-of-the-week then doll-destruction-of-the-week sagas.

Genjuuro's sync training was kind of out of left field, but this one was relatively coherent. Cagliostro felt like she needed to take action after overhearing the sacrifice thing and got herself killed on one side and Chris dealt with her drama on the other side.

That's a good way of explaining it, yeah. There have been plenty of big moments so far, but few of them have really stood out because of the pacing (or lack thereof). Some of the characters also kind of don't feel like they should be there. I guess it's preferable to giving each geah a "designated character development episode", but I don't know. It just feels poorly handled.

The episodic nonsense was a mess, as I said.

But come to think of it, even then, it a gear-change episodes in 6, where you could clearly feel one epoch of the story's development ending and the plot switching to a different track. The plot it was switching to and from was a mess of episodic nonsense, but the skeleton was there.

This season, there's been nothing. They were in Val Verde and then they weren't, but the transition was just a series of fights in an arc already full of fights. LiNKER was a problem and then it wasn't, but again, it's just another battle that didn't do anything to say "yeah, this is the end of that bit and the start of something new", just another sequence where they were losing, got the thing, then won. And let's not even get started on the most recent upgrade, that was brought up purely by chance and could equally well have happened at any time.

He stopped one of Tsubasa's attack and then implied she wasn't using her full power. A pretty far cry from beating all 6 at apparently full power without breaking a sweat. This doesn't make him look good, we already knew he was good, this just makes the gears all just look incompetent and useless. A side-character beating up the entire main cast as a joke is just embarassing for them and cheapens the entire tension of the plot. Who cares if the gears fail? There's someone way stronger than all of them right behind them so no biggie. At least S1 had the decency to eliminate him as being a credible threat to the villain at the end.

I was going to ask if other people felt that Hibiki could have similar 'powers' to Genjuuro even without a gear because she had been training with him for awhile, but this episode made it pretty clear that, physically, Genjuuro and Hibiki have no special connection, despite all the time spent between them. She's just as bad as all the other gears, and is still probably just as useless without her gear as all the others. All the training and jack squat to show for it.
