Loners tend to talk to themselves. I suspect it's because it's comforting to hear a human's voice, even if it's your own.
Anyway, anime is made by and for loners, so none of them would find it weird.

I think it's a Japanese thing.
But it's fucking annoying when a character talks to himself and another character hears him and a misunderstanding happends or some stupid shit.

It's called "sub vocalization", lots of people do it as a sort of way to co-opt the speech center of their brain with figuring something out.
Unless they're having a full on out loud conversation, in which case they're a crazy loner whose been alone for so long that they've started to forget basic social norms (this is a real thing, mostly applies to people stranded on a beach for too long)
