Mikleo is the most popular character of BearsZest period, followed by Eizen, Sorey and Velvet all of them are main characters all of them are related to the lore. All of them were pushed aside for a character both less popular and less relevant to the story.

Alisha is just a side bitch that relies on pity to get people to like her. They tried to push in a Yuri relationship with Rose but, it just so happened that Rose's relationship with Dezel was more liked, so the pushing her with Alisha didn't help either character.

Even though the game sales dropped off, Bamco made up for the money in other areas. That's why they started outright calling Mikleo the heroine because he was safe to push in that role. You do realize that, many people who like Sorey and Mikleo aren't just women right? Quite a few of their fans are male. In top of that you do know that females play games right? In fact that relationship is considered one Zestiria's few strengths. Where do you think the whole, Mikleo is a girl shit originated from? That's the reason why they got pushed together in Asteria twice. Nips don't have a problem with Sorey and Mikleo being together. Granted its because the creators admitted that Mikleo is effectively a female made male because they didn't want to push into a relationship with a girl.

The problem was specifically with Alisha and Rose, yuri doesn't sell, and the pairing was forced as all hell. In top of that the anime didn't have much of Sorey and Mikleo in it, which is the only accepted homo pairing. Plus Alisha being a Mary Sue in the anime pissed people off, while for game it was Rose.

Sorey and Mikleo are well liked amongst Nips both male and female, but they're an exception not a rule. That's something that Ufotable didn't understand. That's specifically is why RosexDezel became such a popular pairing.

Also the real thing that fucked up Zestiria besides the battle system was the bs with Rose and Alisha, it effected both the development and the overall the way the game was seen. The creators never intended for either Rose or Alisha to be heroines , in fact originally both of them were side characters, however the staff and Bamco wanted more eye-candy so one of them needed to be added in. Alisha didn't fit in with the party (because they specifically made her so that she couldn't) so they had to go with Rose. However, that caused a lot of confusion and resulted in wasted time and the game being unfinished (which is actually a major complaint amongst Nips).

Granted making Mikleo a girl would have solved all their problems but there ya go.
