But to answer your question: Mecha was 80s and 90s. The industry shifted towards other genres. If you want modern mecha to be good you need either a) an insane budget or b) really good CGI. The only studio that has the latter is Xebec, and the former simply doenst happen because its too risky and there isnt really a lot of source material that isnt Gundam or hasnt already been put on screen. Modern anime are light novel adaptations, not novel adaptations like LotGH or CoS were. And light novels simply are rarely about space or mechs. They are about romcoms, high school life and other shit. Anime exist to advertise products so if 95% of all source material isnt space/mech, and of the 5% that are hardly any have the cash to boost sales through an anime, then you end up with no shows. Or you end up with KnM or Shidonia, shows that look like fucking dogshit or have noticeable frame drops. Hand drawing mecha simply isnt too expensive nowadays unless you are Gundam (in that case the massive IP behind the franchise just pays the bills).
