10-bit/8-bit shit instead of just x265

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Why do we have to get everything as 8-bit/10-bit and have file sizes increased when the whole point of x265(h265) was to reduce the file size and hence reduce the time taken to download?

I really don't fucking get it, and the worst part is when we need to run this shit on devices that don't do 10-bit in hardware, it either defaults to software or just runs very badly.

Why the fuck should anyone need to use specialist hardware for watching anime? Can anyone justify this crap?

What's wrong with plain old x265 + aac or x264 + aac? The number of people who lose out because of this is far more than the people who have the hardware to watch the 10-bit shit.

Okay oldtimer. I'm in Western Europe and I don't like unnecessarily upgrading perfectly-working 2012 hardware just because some edgy shit wants a snowflake decoding technique.
>>
>>161268847
what doesn't run 10 bit?
>>
>>161268847
Even my phone has h/w decode for 10bit h265, get on with the times. The only odd-one left out is 10bit h264 since there's hardly any h/w support for it considering it was late addition to the standard.

And what's the issue with that, exactly?

You need to learn history, oldtimer, seeing as you lived it. The cold war ended in 1991 btw.
>>
>>161269164
Plenty of GPUs pre-2013. The idea that we should upgrade good hardware to watch video is absurd. Video *games* would make sense at least.
>>
>>161269189
What phone? Afaik, only recent gens have 10-bit.

Fuck off Diaz

You're meant to use hardware decoding when possible, defaulting back to software adds unnecessary load to the CPU, the whole point of using a GPU is to offload work from the CPU, you do know how hardware architecture works right?

>>161269535
Do you? Hwdec only matters in decompressing the streams from the files, and by now the gain in term of load is actually really risible for most of the formats.
I actually have hwdec off all the time, because of its limitations and because some of the APIs tend to fuck with the images in some way or another.
>>
>>161269718
>only matters in decompressing the streams from the files
That's exactly what has a high cost though. You're saying it like it's not what is hitting the CPU the hardest.
>>
>>161269614
I don't even know what you're talking about any more, /pol/ but please go back and stay go.
>>
>>161269817

?
>>
>>161269761
Only relatively speaking, it used to matter in past but now it's really negligible.
Even my old 2010 laptop with a first gen, dual core, Intel Core CPU is able to decode 10bit, 1080p files without too much of a strain.
>>
>>161268847
>have file sizes increased when the whole point of x265(h265) was to reduce the file size
You are stupid.
File sizes have increased with quality (and with encoder laziness). Have you ever compared a modern 300 MB encode with a 30 MB encode from pre 2000?
There is a notable difference.

>>161269898
>facebook
>>
>>161270023
no u
also you're wrong, modern-day encoders kick the literal fuck out of pre-2000 shit. I dont even know how you can say such shit but... oh wait... /a/.
>>
>>161270085
Did you just ignore the point being made by pretending that a side remark was an actual argument?
>>
Filesizes are inevitably up because you should also be keeping 1080p instead of 720p for just about every show. 720p is a downscale nowadays.
>>
>>161270123
your argument seemed to be that encoding has got worse over time, which is total bullshit
>>
>>161270710
>your argument seemed to be
No, it didn't, unless you really were stupid.
>>
I don't care about file size, I delete my shit when I finish watching it. Even if you're a data hoarding autist drives have gotten so cheap now file size doesn't matter.

get out of this board.
what doesn't run 10 bit? a toaster?
even my fucking smartphone runs 10 bit.
>>

Do they even put out 8 bit releases anymore, aside from Deadfish-type encodes?

The fansub community has always placed itself on the bleeding edge of technologies. Personally, I think the only reason for this is a deliberate attempt at keeping casuals out by demanding ever-increasing commitments to latest-gen hardware and making most releases nigh-unplayable on anything other than x86-based platforms and in relatively obscure software.
>>
>>161270203
Can someone provide a definitive answer on this one? There's been arguments and memes about 720 vs 1080 for years.

I watch anime on top of my bed.
It is the comfiest place to watch anime, if you have laptop.
>>
>>161276381
most anime are produced between 800p and 1000p, but there are still a lot of 720 shows so yes the 1080p is worth it if its a good encode for a higher res anime

check anibin for resolutions of specific shows
>>
>>161274671
Or more likely, people into anime are sort of nerdy and bring other hobbies into their anime hobby. Hell, /g/ was practically an anime board for years before normalfags finally took over.

You said it like it was a good thing

What the hell? Are you watching anime on your game console or something?
>>
>>161277544
Didn't know about anibin, thanks. It's a nice resource, but a bit hard to navigate since I have to google translate the page.
>>
>>161269528
No definition of 3rd world includes Western European countries.
>>
>>161272889
Nobody has 10 bit panels, so that anon is right. It has nothing to do with toasters.
>>
>>161279636
He obviously was talking about having the CPU and GPU power to play 10 bit encodes, this has nothing to do with the panel. There are benefits to 10 bit regardless of the color depth of your display.
>>
>>161277932
There's always that too. It's a common critique of the open source software community that hobbyist developers build the software *they* want and not what's best for garden-variety end users.

The warez scene has historically tried to be *very* conservative with their standards for precisely this reason, but the fansub community has never been any way cohesive. Hell, just trying to extract basic metadata from file names is painful.
>>
Obviously the best should be used. If you can't use the best then upgrade. Banding and artifacts still exist so our battle is not yet over.
>>
>>161280817
The benefits are largely irrelevant because all it means is truer to source with more data, which is worthless because we are all using lower fidelity panels and will be until HDR gets popular in monitors.
>>
>>161282197
>truer to source with more data
You mean less data
>>
>>161268847

Daiz has been kill for a while. He hasn't posted in a long time.
>>
>>161282793
Then you don't know what you're talking about. 10 bit encoding is more efficient than 8 bit, a 10 bit encode with the same quality as 8 bit will be smaller, even from an 8 bit source.
>>
>>161276381
Higher res encodes generally preserve data better anyway so you should always keep them unless you have a native res raw.
>>
>>161268847
>download 10bit crap
>complain
10 bit is a meme. don't waste your hard drive space on that
>>
>>161282849
He got bored in general and went to a journey to master his actual shitposting and encoding techniques in some mountain with part of his cult.
>>
>>161283003
Everything is a meme now, even you anon.
>>
>>161279608
the one that relies on quality of life and proportion of terrorists per capita does
>>
>>161283003
Yeah, it's so much of a meme that it's literally going mainstream in all new video formats.
