Your on the right track. Asuka and Shinji have intense self-loathing as something in common. She only finds worth in being the best, Shinji only finds worth in being needed. And they both have deep emotional episodes when the element of their worth is proven to not be the case. It reflects how shallow the character's compassion for themselves is (the narrative provides that these children are raised without love not just because the end of the world happened, but by design to improve their synchronization rates).

The reason Asuka is so popular is because she's deeply tormented and anyone who cares to look at her realizes that her arrogance, bitchiness, and use of sexuality is just a mask she wears so she can elevate herself to a level above her peers. That's how she convinces herself that she can love herself, and of course she's wrong and in the end hates everyone, herself most of all. In reality, at her core she's loyal and wants to be loved.

I think it was Kaworu's nature to love (haven't watched the rebuilds yet). Kaworu was a character who sought, recognized and complimented beauty in the world.

While Kaworu may have loved Asuka, flaws and all, I don't think he would have helped her love her own flaws. So, he's wouldn't be the best for Asuka's own emotional development.

Kaworu called out Shinji on his flaws, and told him he should better himself or else he'll always be alone.
But he also told him he's deserving of love and kindness, which would be the encouragement Shinji needs to work on his flaws of his own accord. By seeing someone else genuinely love him, he could come to love himself as well and then show love to others.

I think it would be the same had Kaworu met Asuka instead. Though I think Asuka would have probably refused to kill him when he revealed himself as an angel and everyone would die.

He accepted the flawed shinji. He commented that he would end up alone, but thats because he already expected to die / go away.
If things changed, and he stuck with shinji, he wouldn't demand from shinji
Sure some confort and kindness help, but without the criticism, its all too easy to stop making progress, because you will always have someone even if you do nothing.
