The funny thing is that yesterday someone was comparing Blitz to Deckard. Ubik starts out with a man talking to his dead waifu who will no longer be able to communicate with the living soon, turns into a story where they recruit a bunch of people with psi powers including a sadistic yandere grill who can alter history (and rewrites time in order to become the beta MC's wife to fuck with his mind which she later undos) and much later makes the MC crawl up the staircase knowing he's about to die. It's a real mindfuck, especially when the dead waifu shows up later.

Most of the characters feel like afterthoughts. And even someone prominent like Meteora would have worked better with a generic "Rei clone to human bean" arc instead of developing offscreen and then turning into an expositionbot. Not to mention the creator/creation relationship angle is almost absent, I think that if something like Blitz and Suruga's scene happened earlier there would have been more interest in this show, since it actually delivered on what people were expecting from the premise.

The last part of episode 17, as well as the scene between Matsubara and Selesia and the end of Mamika's arc shows that they can write competently enough if they hadn't hoarded the budget like complete retards and introduced nine million characters which reduces the amount of development possible for each one and pursued plot threads that are actually interesting instead of monologuing.

Meteora and Rui contributed to Souta's revealing the backstory of Altair's creator and finally getting the plot to move an inch forward, which is sadly more than you can say for Selesia's contribution all show even though the marketing made it seem she'd be a major player.

Although overall I'd say every single character that is not Alice, Souta, Mamika and Altair has little to no necessity in the plot. Altair doesn't even have use for anyone because she can solo everyone on the other team, and is more intelligent to boot. There's zero tension. And despite the development Mamika died for nothing but shock value/marketing ploy which was quite a waste. And of course Yuuya has no reason to be there beyond wanting to fight the old guy and pander to fujoshi in and outside universe. We never even see what exactly pissed him off about Altair/Blitz.

As an aside this whole battle is really pointless, because we all know no one can defeat Altair now. As always there are no stakes to these confrontations, the only time there was, was when Mamika talked to Altair.

The point of the battle is to show if Altair can be defeated or not. We are only told that she is infinite by herself. We haven't been demonstrated the fact. The battle has more weight in the psychological end. Both sides are struggling to get an edge over each other mentally. Altair has to abide by some constraints according to the birdcage plot. Altair benefits from her potential but she is also a villain and a nobody in the grand scheme of things. So she has both keep her cool and make something special happen to get the power she needs from the audience. If she doesn't, she'll be stuck and defeated eventually.

If Altair was a straightforward unredeemable villain, then it would be certain she would lose. But in this case it can go either way toward her losing, her being redeemed or the twist ending where she isn't evil in the first place.
