Maybe. The Monogatari and Madoka series start very well and have a lot of good aspects, but (especially the former) fall into pretentious, pseudo-intellectual tripe and faux depth. Hidamari Sketch makes no such illusions and succeeds as a very endearing character-driven comedy/slice of life.

I do agree that people tend to make Monogatari and Madoka as something super elitist, but they definitely are most popular SHAFT shows and SHAFT themselves advertisee them and continue to work on them. Heck, monogatari is my favorite anime series, but I like most of things SHAFT makes. Hidamari Sketch is great, it's just different type of enjoyment. It's overlooked a lot so I can get where OP is coming from, though I'd disagree with the opinion.
