How did Light screw up in the series? He did end up being written in Ryuk's Death Note because he lost. I believe that he shouldn't have hacked his father's computer because that traced L back to him. He should have also killed Soichiro. Anyways, what is your thoughts on why he lost?

He didn't take the eye deal. If he'd just not been a pussy and gone all in he'd have been fine.
He lost because "lol I had a perfect Death Note replica made to replace yours with" and possibly because of Near manipulating Mikami's actions with the real one that day for extra assurance.

You know, it always struck me as ridiculous. Why in hell would Mikami carry the actual Death Note to the scene of crime instead of just a piece of paper? I mean, if Near manipulated Mikami it makes sense, but Light doesn't look surprised or troubled by it. Light mentions in that chapter how one of the first things he learnt was that you don't need to write in the actual book for it to work. There's the chance that Near manipulated both, but I doubt it because, if he manipulated Light, he wouldn't never be sure if he was really guilty or not. You could make someone confess a crime with the Death Note even if it's a lie. What Light would have actually done if he weren't fated to lose by the author was to write Mikami's name himself and manipulate him into doing things right, carrying just a piece of paper and eating it after writing the names.
