She was basically a background character in the manga who originally had a joke around her being a yuri shipper. KyoAni totally fleshed out her character, best exemplified in the Summer Classes! episode (my favorite of the series, because it's when Mugi became my waifu )

I liked her less the second time through. she seemed more like a plot device, providing the money and being overly interested in any proposed activity.

though the Strawberry theft was one of the best scenes in the show

She's more that way in Season 1 and gets much more characterization in Season 2 (and the last episode of Season 1, Winter Days).

The only black character in the anime is a guy at the airport in the movie.

Episode 13 shows a side to Mugi that is so interesting to me. We already know at this point that Mugi is rich, the daughter of a mayor or someone, and that she likes trying to fit in with girls that are much lower class than her. So she has no need for a part-time job. Mugi starting a part-time job and her reaction when she messes up is heartbreaking to me. She's trying so hard to be independent, making new friends and experiences on her own, and she gets so upset when her sheltered high-class life holds her back. It's weird to me that people still criticize her for being unimportant when her development is so unique.

She's a great character. My favorite episode is the one where Mugi and Ritsu just hang out all day.
