How's that 20th century backlog coming along?

Recently got around to seeing the movie version of Ace wo Nerae! and it was surprisingly decent.
>>
I started Infinite Ryvius a few days ago.
Seen 2 episodes so far.

The style seems weird and non fitting, that graffiti style with the "cool" "rap music". But maybe it'll fit the series better in the end.

So far it's a bit interesting.

The first episode was literally nothing but characters screaming and being angry at each other, but the second episode went in a more emotionally diverse direction, so that's good.
>>
I watched My Favorite Song after the last thread.
The subs had a bunch of mistakes but the movie was nice. Hoshi wo taberu stuck with me since then.
>>
What's the most influential anime?

People often say Astro Boy, but I have no idea if that's correct.
So I'll just go with Evangelion.
>>
Started watching Hurricane Polymar. He really doesn't mess around, in the first episode, he knocked a guy into a cliff face first, and then kicked him in the back of the head twice.

>>
I'm on episode 30 of Utena.

Pointless basically filler arc in the middle aside, this show is great.
>>
Watching Tokimeki Tonight.
The art is ahead of it's time, the writing/direction is great, every episode feels fun and the humor is actually great and comfy.
The music is one of the best aspects!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmxkoaPW23w
>>
I've been meaning to pick up Tokimeki Tonight for a while.
>>
I saw GoShogun The Time Entranger a few days ago.

Ignoring the fact that it takes 30 minutes to get going and that the fight scenes are mediocre, it was surprisingly good. I did not expect it to be as psychologically driven as it was.

I'd be interested in seeing the TV series if I could find it anywhere.

>>
>>161164293
depend of the genre. OP's anime is not famous but it literally put half the base of modern shoujo manga.
Saint Seiya did the same for both Shounen manga AND yaoi manga.

you'll have urge to punch every single character in this anime after 15+ episode

That's a question with no answer but possible answers would be Hakujaden, Astro Boy, Horus, Heidi, Gundam, Akira

I'm fifteen episodes into Rose of Versailles and it's incredible. Oscar is one of my favorite female characters, it's got some compelling drama despite the goofy villains, and it's a generally brisk watch. Episodes fly by like nothing.

Im currently watching Patlabor for the first time. I just got to episode 14. I am hoping for some more serious character arcs like Kanuka's in episodes 10, 11, and 12. Ota's romance in 13 was adorable.
>>

Whoa, what? I dropped Patlabor at some point very early on, partially because I kept getting pissed off at how useless Ota was

>Help, help! My cat is stuck in a tree!

>No, Ota! Please don't!
>BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG CLICK CLICK CLICK
>FUCK I'M OUTTA BULLETS

>>Ota's romance
>Whoa, what?
One episode has him dating a girl because their parents set them up on one of those "arranged marriage" things.
>Does he ever get better?
Kinda. That's something I appreciated about the TV series, the characters do develop as time goes on, but realistically. No one really has some amazing revelation that transforms their personality 180 degrees, but more that they acknowledge their issues and adjust their behavior as time goes on. Specifically with Ota, they point out how he's a better shot than Noa, and while he's still hot-headed he learns to control and handle his aggression.
>>
>>161168239
The humor and characters are top-notch, it's quite atmospheric, and some of the fight scenes are well animated, just be aware that there's a dip in quality towards the middle of its run.

It serves plenty of purposes but four major ones are that it introduces Akio, further fleshes out the supporting cast and as their relationships with the main cast as well as creating a parallel to Utena's and Anthy's relationship.

just this sort of plain, fairly reasonably proportioned regular looking type of girl with a certain flavor you don't really get anymore. sakura from CCS, holly from monster farm, kagome from inuyasha would be popular examples of the kind of design I'm talking about. of course it stretches both directions, but I feel like '00 is really where things were at just the right spot in character art.

It was funny but I think it was the first time the show had that kind of comedy in it. I thought it was a weird sidetrack to take.

Of course the first few episodes are going to be the set up phase, but if you think the story's going to be some crazy mindfuck plot twist festival then you're setting yourself up for disappointment. There's some good dramatic twists but I don't think it's the kind of show you think it is.

Why do people like showa anime It's not as if though I hate Showa anime, there's just legitimately nothing interesting that it can offer me.
I just can't sit down and watch 50 episodes of extremely formulaic and objectively bad acting and writing with little to no hook besides "hey im watching old thing this is neat i am so patrician". I'm not enough of a masochist to subject myself to that and I don't care enough about the opinions of others online to try and gain their approval by pretending that I think Showa anime is in any way actually better than any Heisei anime.

Also, thanks for the pasta. I'll put it to good use.

I mean, the background music is super cool, it's weird but great, a strong point of the series so far. It's just the hiphop and graffiti aesthetic during the episode titles and commercial slides that seems unfitting

Anime is filler shit. Season 1, first two movies and the OVAs are watchable and decent, S2-S3 not so much but follow several canon manga chapters that introduce new characters, S4 onwards there are shitton of filler episodes with occasionally couple of manga episodes. OP ED and seiyuu are the only consistently good things about it.
Ranma fillers are usually bad, manga is better.

by enabling her princess delusion. Didn't you read my post?

Yes, Fukiko was holding Rei as some sort of hostage, her love for Takehiko was teen bullshit obviously, but her feelings for Rei were different, she was constantly craving her attention and punished her whenever she saw her talking with other people. She had seen her talking with Kaoru, so she dropped the needly shit on her hand. She was suspecting she had a relationship with Nanako, so she left her waiting on the rain to get sick, and also to measure her loyalty. Just like Rei was addicted to drugs, Fukiko was addicted to Rei's praise. Things start to change when the sorority is abolished and she realizes she doesn't need such position of power to gain Rei's admiration, and once she's completely gone her character changes into something more passive, ready to mature.

There's no real "rivalry" until Hiromi actually becomes serious about tennis, and Ojoufujin recognizes her as a worthy opponent.
That's around the doubles arc, which is quite far into the first series. I really enjoyed the show though, there was a lot of unexpected stand-out characters. I felt like all the matches were extremely gripping, and those final couple episodes were a great payoff.

Why are you watching so much shit at once? Goddamn. Like two or three series is fine but almost all of those are long running, how are you possibly keeping up with the storylines like that?

On another note, I too am watching Saint Tail and its suddenly gotten really good right around episode 30. It was never a bad series but it definitely had that lull towards the middle of the first half which is typical in these long running shows. Its definitely a solid show though and more people should watch it.
>>
>>161162899
Slayers season 1. First ep was pretty fun. I think I'm gonna like this.
>>
>>161215699

Hey, hey. Theres no reason to go around forcing your shit opinion on other people so calm your tits. Chapter Black was a GREAT arc up until the Sensui fight and anyone who says otherwise is just plain wrong. Was it a good idea to have it back to back with the Dark Tournament? No. That was always my biggest complaint, I know Togashi wasn't necessarily in a good space at the time but even his cock sucking editors could've told him to put a little padding between the two arcs. I think it would've been great to see how Kuwabara, Kurama and Hiei were adjusting after the tournament before we turned to how Yusuke was faring which in turn kick started Chapter Black. The anime did a great job of adapting the manga but the producer definitely could've sat some people down and brainstormed something to go between them because having Sensui following directly in Toguro's shadow made the end seem even more anticlimactic than it otherwise would have but looking at it objectively, Chapter Black was a solid arc. The only thing that was actually bad was Sensui and Yusuke pulling random powers out of their asses but that is literally the only negative thing you can say about it.
>>
>>161216638
>Chapter Black was a GREAT
No. Everything about it was garbage that shit all over the series, and it's literally the point in the story where Togashi wanted to stop writing but they forced him to keep going. People who think Sensui was a good villain or that arc was thematically consistent because "he fought his predecessor!" are literally retarded.
>>
>>161215238
ZZはアニメを超す作品から。崇めるべきだ、お前。これはまさにアニメじゃない
>>
>>161216904

For being the two major big bads of the series, neither Toguro or Sensui were good villains. I haven't read Hunter x Hunter so I don't know if this is something Togashi continues to do to this day, but the fact that both of them fought Yusuke for the sole purpose of having him kill them is stupid, anticlimactic, melodramatic bullshit. A good villain does not need sympathy from the good guys OR the audience so they're both disappointments in their own way. Was Toguro overall more intimidating? Sure but that doesn't make him a good villain.

As for your second point, I do think that defeating his predecessor would have been a good route to take the series IF it had been previously established that there was even a predecessor to begin with. No one ever called Yusuke the 'new spirit detective', he was always just THE spirit detective. There were no hints or easter eggs that we could look back on and say oh, now that makes sense. It came out of nowhere which makes sense given Togashi's mindset at the time, but it was still an empty twist without the setup to really make it impactful. It would've made more sense at that point for Yusuke to usurp Genkai than it was to have him fighting a previous spirit detective but what can you do? So no, I don't think it was a good arc because it was 'thematically consistent'.

I think it was a good arc because it did show us a glimpse of Yusuke's normal life after the tournament, it introduced more human characters after a pretty consistent run of demons only, the entire proceedings in the house of smoke and mirrors felt like a throwback to earlier arcs where the fate of the world wasn't at stake, Sensui's goons suddenly provided a human threat and their shenanigans with the gang were sometimes fun and sometimes serious. It was an arc that rode the line of rompy adventure which was one of the best things about YYH.
>>
>>161217493

Chapter Black only went to shit when Sensui turned on his god powers and after that it was a downward spiral. Suddenly Yusuke was a demon, Enma was the real bad guy all along, there was a spirit defense force that definitely could've stepped in to stop the four saint beasts instead of sending a mostly untrained 14 year old to do the job. It got crazy in a bad way which is a real shame. I legitimately think the series could've recovered from the craziness of the Sensui fight if Togashi hadn't completely said fuck it and thrown every stupid idea he had at the wall.

But my point is that you're wrong because the majority of Chapter Black WAS good and consistent with the rest of the series. It was only the finale of the arc that was bad and its just plain wrong to call the whole thing bad because of that.
>>
>>161217493
>Toguro
>Not a good villain
Nice joke.

>>161217615
No it wasn't, you fucking idiot. It wasn't consistent with any aspect of the series at all. Everything from Sensui's motivations to the battles themselves made no sense.
>>
>>161217981

Tell me then how Toguro's motivations made sense and were valid but Sensui's weren't.
>>
>>161218264
Toguro's motivations were fear of growing old, and fear of actually connecting with people. He's literally what Yusuke would grow up to be if Genkai didn't teach him to pull his head out of his ass. He even says he looked up to him when he first met him. He's a foil to Genkai's teachings, and the story is about Yusuke growing up and taking those teachings to heart. Thematically, he's fantastic. Add to that his terrifying presence and strength, and you've got a great villain. Sensui was some faggot that watched half of a tape and had a mental breakdown.

We could draw up a family tree of anime that originally started various tropes and clichés.
It'll be somewhat difficult though, because nowadays they often get started by light novels and web novels rather than anime.
No one would seriously attribute today's isekai boom to SAO even though it was the first anime to do so.

I've only seen Iria, Bubblegum Crisis and Yamato, but...
Iria is shit, you don't need to watch that at all unless you want experience with the type of anime rather than just a good anime watching experience.
Bubblegum Crisis wasn't to my taste, didn't like it a lot. But I've never liked any cyberpunk, didn't like GitS either, and I did like the final episode, so you can give it a shot.
Yamato is the best of the three anime, but it's also the longest, biggest time investment.

Ranma and Urusei Yatsura are super long, so it'll take an eternity before you get to watch anything else. I guess you could use them as filler in between your shorter series, but if you watch only them it'll take a long time before you get a higher anime count.
Votoms is also long, but it's doable.

I don't watch enough anime to do it like that. In the past few days, I've seen episodes of Infinite Ryvius, Sailor Moon R, and .Hack//Sign, but I also feel the pressure that I should watch a few more, one of them being Brain Powerd, and a week or two ago I started Moomin. So. I probably have maybe 15 anime that I am watching an episode of at least every other month, OR that I feel a strong pressure that I should watch more of soon, but yeah this is pretty much blogging right.

If I get really into something I can watch a lot in a few days without getting burnt out. The last half of CCS only took me a few days, and I only wanted more, didn't get burnt out at all, but I still had a break from anime because my mind was so filled with CCS for a while.

Okay, talking more about Sailor Moon R, since that's the anime I've spent the most time watching lately. At episode 23 now, so more than halfway. I liked the first arc a lot more than the second, current arc. Chibiusa is annoying, and the first arc also had more funnier moments, and the enemies were more interesting. I hope it improves from what it's like now.

I hate how Serial Experiments Lain has a rating in the 7s. Really shows how bad taste some people have.

But I also think the ratings can have some use. At least if you compare two anime, I don't know.

What's up with the art style in Matsumoto's anime?

It's so weird.
>>
I'm still stuck in the ep50 of marmalade boy, I just can't get myself to watch it, I blame reading the manga first for that, knowing the big twists and the like kinda kills the immersion even if it's charming.

This must be the only situation in which the anime is better than the Manga, well, this and Saint seiya I guess.
>>
>>161239691
There's a huge number of well know examples of the anime being better than the manga.
Sailor Moon
Rose of Versailles
Kare Kano
>>
>>161239691
At least the anime gave us the New York arc. And I really like Kitahara Anju. Usually First Girl wins in anime but Yuu not only turned down Arimi, but also Anju; TWO girls from his past. Either one of whom were great girlfriend material.

Speaking of the manga, did you like the idea that the author contemplated Yuu and Miki actually being half-siblings? And how Meiko and Yuu would bond over in college over their failed loves and become a couple? It would have been interesting.

The original 70s anime has some of the tropes of the time like really campy music and filler scenes with the kids but it's just as good honestly. The final episodes aren't manga accurate but they are still solid.
Ashita no Joe 2 is more manga accurate and is one of the most beautifully drawn anime I've ever seen.

Super late response but thats kind of shitty of you to talk up Toguro's motivations but completely shit on Sensui's. The whole point of the Chapter Black tape is that it was all of humanities evil wrapped up in a concise video which, if you aren't aware, humanity can be fucking disgusting. There are all kinds of different atrocities strewn all across our history and if you were presented with even half of that, you would have a mental breakdown too, don't even try to kid yourself. Why do you think Hiei ultimately decided not to watch it? He saw firsthand the effect it can have on the viewer and chose to judge humanity based on his own experiences instead of the overall, biased picture that Chapter Black would've presented.

But back to Sensui: he was already second guessing his job as protector of humanity because he'd seen the way humans were treating demons with his own two eyes and it didn't seem right to him. It wouldn't have sat right with anyone who wasn't a completely brainwashed sheep blindly following orders. Which boils down to the real problem presented in Sensui's character: he accepted the Spirit Detective job seemingly without question and personally took that burden on his own shoulders. He never stopped to ask himself why he was doing it, for who was he doing it for, or even if he wanted to do it at all. Thats why Chapter Black effected him as badly as it did. He never formed his own opinion, he wasn't fighting for anything - he was simply carrying out his job so when the darkness of humanity became clear to him, any morality he may have had was flipped on its head. Thats the real reason why Yusuke was different from him AND a better Spirit Detective. Enma, Koenma, whoever, none of them could've sent him on a mission that would have unveiled the Spirit World's corruption because Yusuke would never have completed it the way they wanted.

I am currently stuck on City hunter season 2.

While i really enjoy City hunter, it's a series that is best taken in moderation since the concept of the anime gets stale if you bindge it. Just as with Yatsura, you can only take so much Mokori before it gets old for a few days.

The OST is awesome as always.
>>
>>161229823
no one cares, it was boring as shit
>>
>>161241044

Continued, because I'm a long winded faggot.

On the flip side, they also knew that sending Yusuke to deal with humans, such as in the Yukina case, was a game of russian roulette. Not only did Yusuke come from a background of physically attacking other humans but if he had come across the same scene Sensui did, he'd have destroyed those sadistic humans without a second thought. Yusuke was his own person before becoming Spirit Detective and he only continued to grow more into that person as his adventures continued. He didn't blindly follow orders and in truth he only took the job half seriously most of the time. The two are complete opposites despite seeming so similar at first glance. Sensui represented more than just a predecessor to overcome, he represented what kind of negative person Yusuke could have become if he wasn't the bullheaded punk he was before taking on the job. Sensui is a what-if to Yusuke's character which, in my opinion, makes him a fine villain. Is he the greatest of all time? Certainly not but I think its ridiculous to claim Toguro is a good villain for the reasons you cited while completely overlooking Sensui's equally valid motivations.

Seriously though, what the flying fuck are you doing with your life? Even if you were watching those shows on TV, you'd still only have to wait a week to watch another episode. Every other month is just insane. Don't get me wrong, I certainly take breaks from anime but never have I watched a single episode every other month. Sometimes I'll just do one episode a day but thats still more efficient than what you're doing. How do you plan on ever finishing anything?

15 may be too much. But some are only for specific settings (Sailor Moon for walks, Brain Powerd on the bus and I feel like it, The Mysterious Cities of Gold when I'm supposed to listen to "teacher" etc.) Some I only feel like watching once in a while, like Corrector Yui.
It also depends on whether I have it downloaded, and where. I watch some on my phone, and some on my laptop. To watch a phone anime, I need it on my phone, to watch on my laptop, I need it there, and the anime I only stream I need an internet collection for.
All this adds up to a huge number of anime.

But I try to limit myself a little. For example, I wanted to try Zambot 3, but because I already was watching Brain Powerd (and Turn A Gundam at the time), I thought I didn't need another Tomino anime before I finish it.

Lately I have had a thing going where I watch one space anime, finish that, then the next etc. Not too long ago, I watched Banner of the Stars, then I watched the last part of Turn A Gundam, now I'm on Infinite Ryvius, and I think my next will be Banner of the Stars 2.

And when I get to a certain point in something that goes really slow, I may decide to just finish it and watch a bunch of episodes quickly.

I also watch anime in between that I'm able to finish quickly, maybe in a few days, without dragging on for months or years.

>>161242868
I thought Sailor Moon R was supposed to be the best season. Oh well, it's still watchable.
When I finish R I'll probably take a break and focus on other mahou shoujo and funny childrens shoujo. I'm thinking I may do Ojamajo Doremi when I finish R, and then I don't know, there's so much to watch.

>but thats kind of shitty of you to talk up Toguro's motivations but completely shit on Sensui'
Except it's fucking not because Toguro's motivation is literally tied to the main character's growth while Sensui literally watched half a tape and went nuts. He's seen humans be good, and he's seen demons be bad, but one tape and suddenly he's the "effeminate sophisticated villain who wants to wipe out humanity" archetype. His motivations were stupid and thematically irrelevant. Your post does nothing but fellate that shitty archetype.

>Sensui represented more than just a predecessor to overcome, he represented what kind of negative person Yusuke could have become if he wasn't the bullheaded punk he was before taking on the job
This is objectively wrong. What you're trying to credit Sensui as is literally what Toguro was. The entire point of Toguro's villain was that he was what Yusuke would have become if he was left alone and didn't get guidance from Genkai. Literally every character including Yusuke talks about this. Your entire post is a load of shit.

Posting absolute kino cus someone mentioned it in the forgotten shows thread. Uchuusen Sagittarius is about 3 strange space animals who run dull courier/repair jobs throughout the galaxy and get pulled into galactic conflict, the terrors of war, existential angst over life/jobs/supporting their families, and reasoning with strange interplanetary cultures. It gets rather deep and thoughtful at times for what appears to be a cute Moomin-esque show, and there's actual danger and risk involved in a lot of the storylines.

It's subbed, by some ESL translation group who do much better than HK bootlegs, but are still a little shaky with wording. I'd love to resub if i ever found the bluray rips.
