I'm just gonna type this out again cause I think some people don't understand what Kanai and Akane were talking about while having sex, and how that relates to Hanabi.

Remember him his reply in saying he just wants his loved ones to be happy. This relates to his mother dying because she died while he was so young he's afraid that the ones he loves will leave him so he wants to maximize their happiness while he still has them. She asks why he doesn't want more than just to love them, and his reply is because he doesn't want to hurt them by demanding more than they want to give. This is why he never reciprocated Hanabi's feelings because he was afraid that one he'd hurt her so he shutdown those thoughts. Akane then tells him that he's wrong and that he shouldn't be afraid to hurt people (demand things from others), because if they're special that kind of pain can be a good thing. Note that in the manga she doesn't finishes her sentence sighting self-awareness. That doesn't means she doesn't believe in it just that she's aware that she's never hurt anyone in order to help them before, Mugi was the first time and that hadn't happened yet. So Akane was basically telling him "It's okay please ask more of me, tell me to stop being a slut, to just love you, even if it leads to both of us getting hurt if it's special it'll be worth it".

Also this is in contrast to Hanabi who doesn't realize that love can and maybe should be painful till the final chapter.
