I stopped paying attention to the plot and only watched it for the characters and robot-kaijus. What are the angels?

The shit starts getting real after episode 16. Everything before is mostly there just to get invested in characters and stuff.

They do sprinkle some relevant info here and there, but it will seem like nonsense that you will likely not even notice while watching for the first time.

Well, to be honest, not knowing where they come from doesn't negatively affect the story.
In fact, it makes them more mysterious than if you knew their origin. Which goes in line with the religious overtones of the show.
