Is Devilman worth watching? If so were should I start?

You only need to read the 1972 original manga.
You could stop right there or also watch the OVAs which are an adaption of the Devilman novels which are also close to the manga.
After that you wait till Spring next year, so you can watch Devilman crybaby by yuasa which is a complete adaption of the manga.
The 1972 anime can be quite fun too, though its way less brutal, so might want to check that one out.
