Ranma 1/2 is a universe where slapstick rules are laws of physics and random violence and martial arts antics aren't considered a big deal.

But even then there's right and wrong.

Basically it has to do with selfishness.

Ranma and Akane are both generally good people because they're not selfish, they have empathy and compassion for others. Even if they get angry for a bit, and act a little selfishly, they'll stop. Ranma and Akane will help people they actively dislike if they need it.

Ryoga and Mousse start out as fairly selfish, greedy people. Only caring about what they want directly, but as the series goes on they start to get more empathy, their consciences start prodding them to do the right thing. By the end of the manga they're both fairly good, noble people.

Kuno's always been chivalrous, in his own dumb way. He's always been presented as a dumb playboy wannabe, so he'll genuinely try to help people even as his idiocy makes him a nuance.

Ukyo's probably the most "gray" character on the good/evil axis by Ranma 1/2 standards. She's kind of helpful, but is just as often just out for herself.

By contrast, Kodachi and Shampoo are both rather selfish and greedy. Shampoo more so than Kodachi.

Just remember that, Ranma, Akane, and Cologne were all worried about Mousse dying because a haunted statue was sucking his life away... Shampoo's response was to play video games.

Shampoo almost never does *anything* without trying to make it benefit herself, everything she does is for Shampoo. She loves Ranma, so she'll do any dirty trick possible to get him, even against his will.

Finally, the two most evil characters in the story, Nabiki and Happosai. This is because they do literally *nothing* ever to help someone else. They're petty, mean, and will gladly throw anybody under the bus if it gets them amusement or sates one of their vices.

Ths second season on was done by filler obsessed people who really wanted Ranma 1/2 to be Usurei Yatsura 2.

The anime then tries to play up a love triangle despite Ranma not giving a crap about any girl other than Akane in the manga

Akane and Ukyo are the only real choices for Ranma. They're the only ones that like him for him, and not because they're insane.

And Akane is the only canon choice
