Part 1

So the Monogatari series as we have now is really the growing up of Koyomi Araragi through the use of allegory and symbol. Nothing super deep, it's literally just adolescence and him becoming a healthy, well functioning, human being using oddities and magic as examples.

In the beginning Araragi is chunni as fuck and has no friends and wants no friends. He does things like say "Having friends makes you weaker" and all sorts of cringy shit like actively discouraging anyone who tries to approach him like Hanekawa. Things like deleting her from his phone in front of her. You could argue that he does it to save her, but it's also in line with his character as of that moment.

His character starts to develop through the series as we see him going around and saving other people. He starts to care about these people, starts to realize that he values their friendship and their love, and generally becomes less edgy. He saves Bat, Crab, Cat, Monkey, each time taking an interest in them while realizing things about life and himself through viewing and solving their problems. A lot of this is done via internal monologue, some cut from the novels, but usually a reflection during the last few moments of the last episode of the arc.

While he is doing this, he throws himself into danger, time and again, and shows he is willing to die for others. You could argue he's just abusing his immortality, but as shown in the last episode of Owari, he'll gladly do it even if he can't regenerate. In a way he shares parallels with Shirou, another popular protagonist from the Fate series, in that he views everyone around him as worth more than himself. This is shown by his willingness to die for Shinobu, thinks Mayoi deserves to be freed first instead of himself, and generally goes through a lot of pain and suffering to ensure the ones he cares about are safe.

Part 2

Throughout this, he is shown failures, such as Snake and Math, which teach him that he can't save everyone, and that sometimes the best thing you can do for someone's life is leave it.

The final piece of the puzzle is Ougi who represents self. By saving himself, he realizes that it's not enough to just care about others, you need to take care of yourself too, because if you are in healthy loving relationships with others, they will care about your well being. It sounds sappy, but some people really do get happiness from seeing others happy.

So the evolution of Koyomi Araragi is at first he is a chunni loner who thinks relationships make him weak. He then goes and discovers that helping people and befriending them is vastly rewarding and makes him stronger. He also discovers that you can't help everyone and some people, no matter how hard you try, will only suffer from your involvement in their life, no matter how good your intentions. Finally he learns to take care of himself, because being someone who just gives all the time and thinks nothing of themselves will only cause others to worry about them.

Thus he went from a immature angry teenager, to an adult with many friendships and a love relationship, who understands the value of when to help, when to step back, and to not neglect your own well being.

Nadeko's case is the first time it really hits Araragi that he can't save everyone. Kaiki pretty much explicitly spells it out to him at the end of the arc. She is beyond Araragi's ability to save, and him trying is only going to make things worse for her.
Which is why, as Ougi says, she 'won' that round. She lost in the case of Sodachi; she managed to force Araragi to confront the problems of his behavior, but in the end he managed to save her anyways (with Cat's help). Tadatsuru was a draw, kinda need to rewatch Tsuki myself to remember fully what exactly happened there.

They aren't the same, just similar. Araragi develops this complex where he will leap into danger, risking life and limb for other people, in contrast to his earlier attitude of "fuck everyone but me". This takes form in his immortality, both as a symbol and a convenient plot device to, you know, keep him alive. Eventually he realizes his life is worth something, unlike Archer who sacrificed his life and afterlife for others. If anything, he's closer to the Shirou at the end of UBW, who at least has Rin to keep him in check. I would say Araragi gets more developed though, and fully embraces by the end that his life is not something he should carelessly or even thoughtfully throw away. This is literally personified by Ougi and his decision to save her, which is also saving himself. It's very blunt and not subtle at all. They hammer it into you a million times at the end.

Forgot to mention but Ougi is also the part of him who criticizes and judges everything he's ever done and attempts to undo it. Araragi began to feel like he didn't deserve all these good things that were happening to him. He went from a friendless loser to a guy dating Hitagi with his own mini harem of beautiful girls. He was also ripped as fuck and had vampire powers. Somewhere along the way, he thought it was bullshit, like he didn't deserve all this, like he was the protagonist in an isekai manga. However, we the audience, as well as Araragi himself eventually accept the happy ending because we deem him to have worked hard enough, to have suffered enough, to get the rewards at the end. We saw him literally die and get torn to shreds for others. We saw him suffer immense pain, have his limbs lopped off, set on fire, and just generally get beaten to a pulp. There are no fight scenes in all of Monogatari, just one sided shitshows. In the end, by accepting Ougi, he accepts that he is allowed to have all these friends and the best girl as his gf, and nobody begrudges him because he's earned it.

If it was just some isekai protag who was skilled from the get go and all the girls fell on his dick, nobody would care. It's because Araragi helps them and grows as a character himself that we not only accept, but actively root for a happy ending.

I won't call it the greatest writing ever or anything, but as an acolyte of Fortean literature I am always amazed by the multi-layered construction of metaphysical causality Nisio employs. Strangely enough, it is an absolutely fantastic representation of certain unifying theories of paranormal aspects of reality which hinge upon synchronous connections between conscious intent and subconscious representation. On top of that, all of the metaphysical constructions are intimately tied to characterization. Even if the connections aren't particularly subtle, and sometimes might even be wielded against the audience too bluntly, the mapping of the whole thing is somewhat awe inspiring.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I really appreciate all these Monogataris (Katanagatari too).
