OP's choice of character is retarded to illustrate the point because she was never supposed to be evil. But in general it's near impossible to write a good evil character because evilness is not a real character trait. Going out of your way to make the world a worse place against your own interests is basically just bad writing. And as soon as you make sure that the results of the character's actions actually reasonably in that character's interests (for reasons other than "for the LULZ"), that character is no longer just evil, just like a company competing with yours is not evil. Their interests are just opposed to yours, and they are using free market techniques to come out on top.

The more I watch anime the more I realize how much the culture of Japan shows in said Anime. I honestly wonder if it actually effects it as much as I think it does.


Being an evil person requires going against the grain, saying fuck other people, being, improper, and impolite. All these things are expected in Japanese society so it may be harder to envision it. Get proper background from what you were taught on and given.

The more I learn about Japan's customs the more it seems so isolated in them. Or maybe I just don't know enough about Chinese or Korean customs to say their similar.


Someone like Dark knight's Joker could only be written in a society that has had experience with enough sociopaths serial killers in it's history, that we could mold those elements into a character and give it life.

Fucking animeonlies. Dio may be simple as fuck (he's from an 80's manga after all) but that's because the part he's in is just as simple as him. Don't fall for the memes, he's not the best villain ever, that's obvious. He works better as a backstory character for the parts where he doesn't actually appear. He's a huge walking meme in part 3, and he's mostly worshipped by nostalgiafags (that's also why he's still so insanely popular in Japan compared to the other villains). Kira is arguably more believable than him. The quality of writing in JoJo gets better with each part and you should read the manga.

I'd argue Nagito Komaeda exists, but then I remembered he was inspired by the Joker. He's a wonderful example still.
Still I'd add that yanderes embody this chaotic madness to an extent. Characters like Dio Brando and his clones (Hisoka, etc) exist too. Makishima from Psychopass as well, but then again the urobutcher isn't someone who confines himself to japanese culture and literature. Anyways I think the japanese are great at portraying fanaticism (love gone wrong essentially) and chaos in general.
Now that I think about it, fanaticism itself is the key difference between Komaeda and the joker. Correct me if I'm wrong I'm not that well versed in comics, Komaeda is ultimately doing all his shit for the sake of an ideal, but the joker isn't. He is much more nihilistic in nature. Essentially it's as if japan can't conceive a character who'd give up on and reject society entirely. Which is exactly what a sociopath is. Ah but no, Dio exists. "I reject my humanity!" indeed.

Have you read the book? A lot of scenes in which his beliefs and philosophy towards existence were shortened or outright omitted for one reason or another and a great deal of focus was put on how Sheriff Bell, a sane and wholesome older man, could never begin to wrap his mind around a psychopath like Anton and the more he tried the more grim, cynical and perplexed he grew. Chigurh encapsulates a sublime evil and insanity that is subtle yet undeniably powerful, and as far removed form the cringeworthy edge of a psychotic lunatic in anime as possible because the only thing the average anime writer understands about insanity comes from equally terribly written series in which being crazy gives you superpowers and makes you give evil speeches while licking the blood from your katana and a red aura glows from your body while you say super dark and scary things. It's basically pure garbage.

The book is cheap and extremely quick to read so you really should check it out if you haven't already if you really want to see what a good yet undeniably evil villain looks like. The movie gives you a good idea but the book is the way to go to get the full picture.

He's driven by a very specific type of mindset that isn't terribly uncommon for antagonistic characters but the way he carries it out and how it moves him into the role he has in the story is extremely well written. Case in point the famous gas station scene, which seems to sum up his relationship with humanity at large. Immediately he takes a disliking to the clerk due to arbitrarily conflicting with his ideology in a way only he understands, speaking in a nearly incomprehensible roundabout manner and issuing extremely vague threats but it was that very ideology that drives him to senseless murder that also had just barely spared that man's life as well.
Add to that he's an extremely intelligent character written by an intelligent man, as I'm sure you're already aware from the obvious screencap. Nine out of ten genius villains in anime are written by fucking idiots who think intelligence is a magical superpower that can be defeated by the power of love and friendship.

Well, yeah, more headshots are lethal than not. But saying that headshots "should" be lethal--sure, they should be, but they aren't always.
A cursory Google search gave me more than one story about people who have survived being shot twice in the head--and that's two bullets at once, surviving an actual double impact, rather than the potentially more feasible case of surviving one bullet two times.

Also there's nothing wrong with someone surviving a headshot. It happens in real life, although rarely. The problem is when you betray the reader's expectations by implying the bullet is decisive and will definitely kill the victim. In Monster's case, we first hear of Johan after he's been shot, and for the second headshot it happened out of the blue without much weight to it, so it's okay.
