Strangely enough this is the truth. In UBW and HF he will never reach that point because he has someone he loves to share his life with, also in HF he threw away his ideals.

In Fate route (without the alternate RN end) Shirou is left with his ideals in tact and without someone at his side. That ends in becoming the red man.
