Most of the time this isn't intent, it's just what is readily available at a reasonable cost. Some anime and video games required all dialogue or a large part of it to be in a foreigner language or a made up language, but would have been an impossible task. It's no wonder some content creators have said a dub in X language was better to the original Japanese.

Video games usually have less scenes and far more budget than anime productions, so more often they can afford good foreigner voice actors to create and release the game exactly as it was intended (Example: Capcom, Grasshopper and Platinum. Their games never get a Japanese dub option or get it much later in a re-release). Anime usually ends up hiring any random foreigner living in Japan.

It depends. Is the dub good? Do the voice actors try their best? Does the dub actually add something to the end product, resulting in a new experience? Is the original dialogue suited to translation, or is it really poor and doesn't sound like an actual conversation? I can't recall someone providing a source for these though? The classical example is Bebop, but the best you can find is Watanabe saying he thought it sounded good. When trying to find a source for these things it usually only leads to tvtropes as well, which isn't exactly a good sign.

Naturally I wouldn't mind not having to look down on the subtitles every time I watch anime, but there are a few reasons as to why I still prefer subs rather than dubs:

- The english voices are generally speaking in most anime fucking awful
- Japanese sounds cooler; this might simply be because I don't understand all of it. Sounds 'deeper' when you don't understand it.
- English just doesn't fit in anime. It sounds wrong. Honestly. This is what I think.

Now, the ideal solution would be if I could speak Japanese fluently, but I can't and I'm too lazy to learn it properly. I understand a bunch of words and phrases, but that's it.

Dubs usually sound worse if you have listened to and gotten used to the Japanese voices though. I haven't watched the sub at all so nothing sounds noticeably bad or off except for pic related. She sounds kind of like english Ash Ketchum and it doesn't fit very well.

When people say subs are always better than dubs it's similar to when people say a book is better than the movie adaptation or a manga is better than the anime. When you are reading subs you can imagine the dialogue being said in whatever way you want. Sure you can hear the voice and emotion of the Japanese VA delivering their lines but unless you understand the language you can't know exactly how well they delivered their lines, where in a dub you do and can notice easily when it's bad.

Sometimes I use subs but its really annoying to pause and rewatch scenes because the text vanishes an instant after it pops on screen.

Aside from detracting from the watching part, this is probably the most annoying element of subtitles as I've actually gotten used to the way japanese sounds and isn't so jarring anymore.
