What's your favorite Haruhi episode /a/non?
>>160989095
Someday in the Rain. It's just a great conclusion to the series, and it shows all the character development throughout the series.
Haruhi is garbage. So I don't have any.

what I like about Haruhi is that there's something important happening in almost every episode, which makes this show very entertaining to watch.

>Haruhi put one hand on my shoulder, its power causing a slight change in my lower region. – Random Numbers.
Every time.
>>161004327
>In that instant, Haruhi began to slip free from the cross. With her head hanging down as she slumped over, she looked like a saint being freed from the bonds of crucifixion. The stone floor of the courtyard was directly under her, and headfirst, she began to fall.
>“Haruhi!”
>I didn’t think about anything. Not about consequences, memories, or any kind of duty or sense of righteousness. I didn’t need to. I just kicked off the window frame and jumped out into thin air, like I expected wings to sprout from my back. As though pushed by someone’s invisible lifting force, I caught Haruhi in my arms just as she fell. And then, naturally, pulled by gravity, we both fell. Headfirst.
I really think Tanigawa is one of the better LN authors. He really writes more like an actual novel should be written.
>>161004451
That scene is great. I know Haruhi has been on Kyon's soft side in the last volumes but this time he literally tries to cushion her fall with his skull while calling her his one and only leader. Really shows you how far they've all gotten, which is the point of Surprise in my opinion.
>>161004451
>Haruhi’s body was more delicate than I’d imagined. I’d never seriously embraced her like that before, so I’d never noticed.
>But the sense of warmth, of softness, made me realize that this really was Haruhi. She was just a second-year high school student, in the bloom of her girlhood—just an ordinary girl.
>This was the true form of sleeping beauty. Even if I died the very next moment, her name would live on, carved in history. The girl softly breathing in my arms was, beyond any doubt, Haruhi Suzumiya.
- - - -
>The ground was getting closer. Owing to her unconsciousness, Haruhi’s body was limp, and slightly feverish. It was just as Koizumi said. That delicate body with its curves right where you’d expect them, the surprisingly slender shoulders, the slight fragrance—I knew better than anyone else that this was Haruhi.
>When humans fall from high places, they die. I didn’t have to guess at what my skull would look like after falling at this rate of gravitational acceleration and slamming headfirst into the stone pavement.
>Had I been a little too hasty? At the very least I could’ve set up a mat on the ground, or strapped on a parachute—.
>Of course, I didn’t have time for such introspection. The only thing I thought of was the faint notion of curling around Haruhi and putting myself between her and the ground to absorb some of the impact.
>The sound of rushing air roared in my ears. I would be hitting the ground soon.
>I closed my eyes. Tight.
>I embraced Haruhi. As tightly and closely as I possibly could. – The Surprise of Haruhi Suzumiya, final chapter
I want another novel motherfucker
>>161004690
Just imagine how well it'd translate to anime.
>>161004766
I dunno I think it'd be kind of hard to get all of that detail, I guess it just be Kyon narrating the entire thing as usual.

>>161004873
In ten years people will be getting degrees in memeology or history with concentration on memes.
>>161004451
That's because Tanigawa actually knows how to write (and may as well be a genius, he wrote Disappearance in 3 weeks). Most LN authors are just amateur writers who do it in their free time or are just publications of web novels which are honestly even worse than most LNs. Very few LNs are actually written properly.
>>161004801
I mean, they managed to get Disappearance to be as good as it is, I'm certain Ishihara could work his magic and get Surprise to be amazing.
>>161004963

Yeah it's kind of ridiculous, I started reading those Kino no Tabi LNs after finishing Haruhi's, and it's really such a pain to get through. There's just no flow.
I love this weird almost meta but also straight slice of life
>>161004905Haruhi walks over to him. She's wearing stylish springlike adult clothes. He looks at her and realises she's older. She looks at him and asks him how he moved to the grassy area so quickly, then looks again at him and asks why he's dressed in their old North High uniform. Finally she looks at him again and realises he looks younger.
Kyon is at their future university campus. College age Haruhi gives Kyon a warm smile as he time travels back into the past, where he lands face down on top of Haruhi's bed as she's sleeping.
She wakes up and looks directly up at his face which is only centimeters apart from hers.
Both are stunned. Instead of screaming like a girl like one would imagine would be a normal reaction in this type of situation for a girl, Haruhi causally pushes him off from on top of her and asks him to cover himself with the bed sheets as she gets up and changes.

I hate to be the guy that replies to a bunch of people and tells them they're wrong, but I read the light novels and the series takes a very weird direction after that, with the "yuki gets sick" chapters being the only good ones out of like two whole novels.
The main plot turns into a twisty bizarre mishmash of timelines just so they can call Kyon a slider by the end because muh callbacks. And the conclusion to that is not even as satisfying.
That said, the light novels were always way worse than the anime adaptation, so maybe they would have improved them to watchability?
Anyway, since I hate to criticize without being constructive, here's a nice conclusion to the light novels that I enjoy far more than the dumb cliffhangers https://www.fanfiction.net/s/4994973/1/Meet-the-Suzumiyas it has some dumb romantic comedy tropes and doesn't focus on the extended cast much, but otherwise is flawless.

I love the one where they live as happy couple.
And right after that, there is the one where they are raising children as a family.
>>161028228
The series takes a weird direction but that weird direction also deals with the common criticism of the series having this massive sci-fi background and then not doing too much with it outside of Melancholy and Disappearance. Intrigues and Surprise both add to this well in my opinion and they work really well to further Kyon's thoughts on different group members (Haruhi primarily, Koizumi secondarily).
The short stories are also generally good, with only a few misses like Wandering Shadow and Where did the cat go?, while there are many largely significant ones like Snowy Mountain Syndrome, Love at first sight, and Editor in Chief.
A criticism I would lay on is that Tanigawa opened too many plotlines and left them all open by the end of surprise, which has a very inconclusive ending. From Intrigues we're still missing Tsuruya's Rod, we don't know what's going to happen with the Wandering Shadow, Fujiwara being Mikuru's brother is thrown out there and then nothing else, we don't really know a lot about Kuyoh and have no idea what she's gonna do now, and then the present that Kyon needs to give Haruhi.
I think the rest of the books are written well, but Tanigawa went way too hard on interesting plotlines and made way too open of an "ending."
