DEEN's clusterfuck of an adaptation doesn't count. Ufotable's UBW is better but it's still missing a lot of things since they can't actually adapt all of Shirou's monologue. I would suggest to at least read Fate before going to HF.

You can go into it without much issue if you haven't watched Fate/Zero, I don't know how Deen's adaptation is since I never watched it. The best way is still to read the VN.

Read Fate, then if you want read HF before UBW because if you've watched the anime then you will at least have the knowledge to enjoy HF, but do go back and read UBW afterwards because the anime misses a lot and doesn't really convey the whole story to you. This is what I did by the way, because I watched the UBW anime first and couldn't wait to read HF.

But if you do have the patience then just read UBW before HF, UBW is the shortest route anyway.
